Suggested books?
« on: December 29, 2018, 05:35:56 PM »
Hey

I'm new to Blacktail hunting and bow hunting.  I have done some Whitetail hunting in the midwest.  Any suggestions on books and resources for learning how to hunt Blacktail?  It doesn't need to be bow hunting specific. Thanks in advance!

There are a handful out there but Trophy Blacktails (the science of the hunt), Scott Hagen and Blacktail Trophy Tactics II, Boyd Iverson are both really good.

I worked with Boyd's brother for many years.  His books are outstanding.

I tell everyone to read scientific papers and studies, rather than a book.  It his sometimes very boring, but you glean a lot more info on biology, behavior, and specific habitat, than a stack of books.  Bonus is they are often searchable and free online.  This is especially true for predator hunting and management.  I find that reading both books and papers helps dispel a lot of the housewife tales and myths associated with a certain animal.  That last statement is mainly geared toward coyotes than anything else.
Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

You want to learn about blacktail hunting, sit at a table with Larry Jones for a couple hours and shoot the breeze.  Do more listening than talking.   Best couple hours I've spent in a long time.  :chuckle:
I know most wont get that opportunity, but Id probably try to find some old videos or literature.    Old school!
