Is that a Northern Shoveler?

Is that a Northern Shoveler?
Yes, a.k.a. Spoonbill or Hollywood Mallard. A fully plumed drake is one of the most gorgeous puddle ducks in North America.
If you find yourself down in Northern California on a hunt there will be days where other than pintail (daily limit 2) the only birds working will be spoonies. Lots and lots of them.

In Sacramento valley I did not want to fill my limit with them even though they were decoying crazy. But It is always fun to kill them if you find someone to eat them!

Same here! A colored up drake shoveler has always been a bucket list bird of mine. Finally got it done a couple weeks ago. Got three drakes but one had perfect plumage. A Barrows drake is a bird my brother has always wanted. It was very unexpected but we got both of our birds on the same hunt! They will definitely be taking up more space on the wall! I will try to get some pictures attached. I may need help in doing so but I'll give it a try first.

I can't seem to get the pictures posted. If anyone could post them for me I'll send the pictures your way! Thanks

I shot one two years ago, it flew by a bit over head height and I could immediately tell what it was. Very cool bird to look at and it tasted good as well, or at least I don't remember it tasting bad. Looking back, I should have had it mounted as I haven't even seen one since then.

I got a nice colored up one this year. I think it was November. Was the first real colored one I have gotten. There were 2 like that in a group of 5 that came in. I guess I didnt realize that getting a good colored one around here is that much of a challenge. I will take spoonies all day long, they make just as good of jerky as everything else.
