Thoughts on humidity and ELR.
« on: December 30, 2018, 09:49:55 AM »
Want to hear your thoughts.

My local range is generally humid. Cold and humid or hot and humid.

Re-learning to shoot in high heat, mirage, and humidity. Learned about it in school, but as all things, its perishable.

Ive noticed shooting in the south in high heat/ humidity, i can cut my acceptable first round hit distance down to 1K, sometimes less. Always less in high humidity.

And 1600 is proving to be sporadic for even a 2.5-3 moa group size.

Subtract the heat and humidity, or when i pack up and head back west, its easy days out to 2100.

My experience level in shooting long range is more than most, but I'm always eager to hear thoughts, and maybe dig up some things I've forgotten to account for or be aware of.

Want to hear some thoughts from dudes work these conditions often. Or are just knowledgeable to begin with.

rbros 7mm 180 HLD 3100 fps.
I will add this gun is at 1150 and counting, on the round count, and is opening slightly. I can still get .5 but 3/4 is more frequent these days..25 or less was not unheard of brand new (100m).
This is the first barrel I'll see shot out as the work guns are changed before coming close to being shot out, and those are what Ive shot the most. I suspect this maybe part of it, but let me hear it!

Appreciate the input.

I’ve noticed humidity can affect sight at ELR ranges but I don’t feel it moves light like mirage but maybe when combined it’s a bit tougher to spot.  High humidity means less drag but I feel mv variation has more effect

That for makes sense. Same thing Travis mentioned as well. Its a head scratcher for me because as you said its less drag. Maybe a mental barrier at this point.
I will say Ive had a pile of issues with MV since I've been here. I talked with Travis a bit about my reloading and powder storage process. Reloading is a newer task for me as we've always been provided rounds.
I recently learned about annealing as my brass had about 10 fires under their belts when the issues started. And I stored my powder in my shed... Rookie move. Travis squared me away there.

Just reaching out to see what other factors i may be overlooking.

I think humidity coupled with mirage can definitely multiply the effects of the mirage (bending light) so when aiming for the target your actually aiming high and the direction of the wind.  Which could be moving multiple directions.   I’m still learning the whole ELR game and the conditions school me just about every outing. Just keep shooting and learning.
