300rum 220 eld-x performance on elk
« on: December 30, 2018, 10:52:07 AM »
I’ve always been an accubond/partition kind of guy and am thinking about going outside my comfort zone (for some reason) and trying these eld-x’s. What are your thoughts or experience with them on elk under 600yds? The bc looks great and they’re supposed to retain 50-60% but I’m worried about too much fragmentation if it hits heavy bone or if I end up with a close shot.

If you’re not shooting past 600 then What’s the need for an ELD type bullet? If you like accubond I’d stick with those

I can’t leave well enough alone  :chuckle:
220gr at 2900+ sounds pretty good if the bullet will stay together at close ranges too.

They won’t stay together. They are good bullets but won’t retain weight like an accubond.

:yeah: the only pass through’s i Have had with the eld-x is on shots over 500 other than that they fragment and cause massive internal damage.

My best friend put 220 ELD-x's in two elk past 600. They held together and mushroomed perfectly. I was considering switching to the ELD-x for my 7.

I shoot bergers, and they hand grenade, but the elk don't move. So i put it center mass, and 4 ish inches behind the shoulder. Ive had minimal meat loss.

Inside 600 there's zero change I'm picking eldx over an accubond.  That said there's zero change im not using a 215 berger in a rum  :twocents:

You’d use the 215 Berger inside 600 with a rum?

I still haven’t bought into the whole fragmenting bullet thing but I know there are much more experienced guys in here than me who swear by them, so maybe I’ll dabble in it for deer or something. Also, my mag length is 3.75 and it’s a 10 twist 26” barrel.

I shot them from my rum for a few years at 3.800 inches oal and 2970 FPS not speedy for a rum but it worked and I continue to use them in my 300 win. They really don’t cause much more damage than similar weight bullets. You shoot them in the ribs and get a golf ball size wound channel, but shoot them in the shoulder and get more damage like any bullet. I’ve killed animals between 70 and 700+ yards with them and can’t see any reason To change

Can you get a longer magazine in your rum?

I can’t get a longer mag, as far as I know. It’s a fierce fury and I’m almost positive it uses a Sako 85 mag.

You’d just eat up some case capacity. Give them a shot.
