Just saying hello
« on: January 01, 2019, 02:38:38 PM »
I'm really glad to see the camaraderie and how cool you guys/gals are. So I finally got the nerves to stop stalking the forums and saying hi. :)

I'm a complete novice, although I have hiked and done other outdoor activities in the past. I signed up for hunter-ed (starting on Feb 4) and I was wondering what else can I do to get ready for fall, apart from shooting practice.

What do you guys do during the off-season? I would like to get as prepare as possible.

PS: Also, if someone is looking for a hiking partner/sailboat partner I'm in.

Welcome to the site.

Some people hunt coyotes in the "off" season.

Scouting will always be key. While scouting year round helps, I always scout just before season starts and always during season. As food sources change, deer patterns change.

Continue your hiking and roaming around.  Spend all your outdoor time in the country you plan to hunt.  Learning the geography is key to notching a tag.  Plan what you are going to do with the animal when you get one.  Can you field dress and take care of the meat so you can enjoy the bounty of the hunt?

...and once the rabbits are field dressed, how are you going to get them out of the woods?  :chuckle:

Welcome!  Maybe you should tell us what you're planning on hunting.  :)  We can better mislead you that way.

I'd recommend you use the search function at the top of the page to read all posts regarding the species you're interested in chasing.  That should take a couple weeks.  As mentioned before, if you're chasing deer or elk, scouting during the off season is very important.

Pick up a shotgun and go turkey hunting this spring!  Learn how to shoot a bow or muzzleloader to afford yourself as much time in the woods as possible. I'd recommend listening to some podcasts like The Meateater and Hunt Talk Radio to help get some good insight and to help keep the hunting fire lit during the off season.

Welcome to the forum, a lot of really knowledgeable and good guys on here.
