Youth turkey hunting questions

My 10 year old daughter has been showing a lot of interested in hunting. I believe a first good hunt for her would be a youth turkey hunt. She is working hard on the online course and should be able to get her safety course done by April. My questions are; does the whole state participate in the youth hunt (weekend before general season opens) also will a 20 gauge do the trick. She shot my 12 gauge the other day and it wasn’t so much the kick but the shot gun is just a lot of gun for her to handle.

Any other info would be great. I have a place in mind that I have hunted before. I’ve only been turkey hunting twice but looking forward seeing my kid get excited about hunting in general.

Whole state is open during the youth turkey season ther first weekend in April.  Are you located on the west side?   If so I do basic turkey hunting clinics with WDFW.  Watch their site under hunting clinics in hunter education.  I am also doing a 3 part seminar series doing the Sportman's show in Puyallup.  Wednesday and Thursday turkey hunting 101, Friday is gear and tactics and Saturday is calls and calling.   We also have a booth setup at the show.  Stop by have plenty of people there to answer your questions.  A 20 ga would be perfect for her just make sure you pattern the gun.  Last thing is watch out on the WDFW site.  You can get her signed up for a mentor hunt on private property.  You will be able to tag along.  If your on the west side and doing her first ed I am also a hunter ed instructor at the Black Diamond Gun Club.  I try to do a couple of the online field courses during the spring but I am pretty busy during rhis time with all of my National Wild Turkey Federation events.

Enjoy your hunt.  Turkey hunting kicked off my daughter's love for the sport.  I think it is the absolute best intro into hunting.  I set her up on some shooting sticks and she uses a 12 gauge.  20 gauge would be fine as well.

I'm a grown man and I pack the youth 20ga.  Theres no downside.  With proper choke and shell combo it patterns just about as good as my 12 and it weighs several pounds less.  Easier to keep on the knee for longer periods and swings fast for those unexpected Tom's who like to circle.  I never let my youth hunters shoot Turkey loads though.  Toss in some light target loads for target practice so they dont develop any flinching issues.  In the heat of battle she'll never know the difference.

I packed a 12ga around for 15yrs Turkey Hunting and now I hunt with a 20ga. Turkey is my favorite to hunt period. A ground blind is very helpful with kids also. What kind of questions do you have to help narrow it down??
