150 grain broadhead recommendations?
« on: January 03, 2019, 09:52:49 AM »
I'd like to tinker around with some 150gr heads this winter to see how they fly compared to my 125gr heads.

I've got a pile of arrows already set up and I dont want to completely change my set up just add a little bit more weight to increase overall arrow weight and see what kind of results I get.

Anybody got any recommendations on 150gr broadheads?

Slick Trick and Excalibur (Innerloc) are two good options.

Kudu. I really like the 125’s. Best flying broadhead I’ve tried.

I'd try brass inserts and 125 grain heads.  This will give you more broadheads to choose from.

If money is no option, EASILY the iron will outfitters head, or ANY valkyrie broadhead -  these guys are the leader in heavy heads IMO. They have up to 350gr heads with deep six jackets.

Hands down the VPA 3-blade in 150 grain! I started shooting them this year and love them. This with a 50 grain insert packs a hell of a punch. They are fairly inexpensive, fully machined, cut on contact, and easy to sharpen. Ive shot a pile of broadheads and this has been my favorite. I shot a bull quartering towards me this year, arrow went in behind the shoulder, through the cavity, then snapped the femur clean in half...he didnt make it far...

Thats what I ended up doing for the time being. Although I picked the wrong time to increase my arrow weight. We just started archery league and now my pins are spaced a little more than I'd like and my arrows are bit slower but they are flying better than they ever have.

Currently at 520 grains overall.  THanks for the input guys.

So with traditional archery the arrow is almost more important than the bow and switching to compound recently I found that’s not how many think. Higher point weight equals more FOC, more K/E, more accuracy, more penetration, thicker and stronger broadheads, and generally the speed loss isn’t taken into effect until past 40 yards. Before that your pins might have to be moved a hair width. After the difference still isn’t much. 100 grain drops 18” less then a 150 at 70 yards I think it was. The added benefits are nice for hitting bone or hunting anything bigger then deer. With my recurve I shot arrows that were 13gpi, 29”, 190 grain heads, and got pass through’s on a hog and a deer that I hit a shoulder and rib. That bow only clocks 180fps.

I chose 150s for my new Mathews and my broadheads are cutthroats, single bevel, insanely tough, and buzzcuts/stingers. The buzzcut is a wee bit thicker and most rated it a bit higher on the deadly scale than the stinger. The plus side with these broadheads is that if they’re ever damaged they’ll be replaced free of charge. So I don’t feel bad shooting small game with a broadhead because I’ll just get a new one free.
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

Amen

I am going to try some VPA three blade 150 gr and VPA three blade 125 gr with a 50 gr brass insert.  I am also going to try several other 125 gr three blade heads in the upcoming months
