Bear rugs?

Whats the usual cost you guys have spent to make a bear hide into a rug these days?

I remember as a kid when i went over to Uncle Aubreys that rug he had for thousands of years.
Man we used to sleep on it, pick it up and fake like we were a bear and walk around the house with it draped over us scaring the kids younger than us.
it had the head stuffed and open mouth lol!
I want one some day too.

I paid either $152 or $158 per foot on my spring bear from 08. It's still not done though. He said it'd be a 12-14 month wait and I brought him in on May 30 last year.    There was another thread about this quite a while ago and it seems that was about the average price.

Ive got a bear still in at peters,havent deciced what to do with it,Seems he wanted 1700 for a rug and 2700 for a full mount,to late for the rug hes already tanned it for full mount or shoulder,2 yr wait

Mine is going to be about $1000 when it's done, and was a smaller bear.

About $200 for the skull mount too.

I brought mine in in August and he said about 6 months.  It's not done yet.

Price really depends on who you take it to.  I think anywhere between $150 - $175 is standard for a Bear rug around here.  Though I have seen them anywhere from about $130 - $200 per lL/F.

I made a post earlier this year that kinda talks about what to look for when choosing someone to do your rug.  Price right now is a BIG factor especially with the economy being what it is.

IN a nut shell make sure the taxidermts sews his or her rugs.  Some like to glue the felt and backing on.  If you want to see what a glue job on a bear looks like look at the one hanging by the front door at Cabelas.  The glue is a cheap way of putting rugs together.  I have had 1/2 done inquires this past year already asking to get some re rugged because the glue is pulling apart.

Make sure the Bear comes with hanger.  Preferably one in each paw and in the head.

I agree with Michelle on the glue part.  Absolutely have them sewn, as for the hangers, good advice, but not necessary...many don't do it and I'm not sure I'd use them if I had them....

Hangers suport the weight of the rug.  Preventing you from having to use the felt.  Than a tack here and their will keep the felt up against the wall.  far less nail or tack holes in the wall.  Those that don't know how to properly hang a bear rug can really screw up the felt if not using hangers.  That is why I recomend the hangers.  Wether they use them or not I install them on all my rugs and instruct the individual how to hang them if it is their first time using hangers or putting up a rug.

I didn't say I didn't know what they were, just that they weren't a necessity, and I would be more concerned about finish work, price and so forth of a taxidermist than if they installed hangers or not.

Neithers hide paste along the seam on a mount.  Though it does help with the longevity of the mount in the long run.

Thought you did seamless mounts.

All antlered and horned game mounts are going to have a seam.  The short "Y" incision reducess the seam.  The seam on my short "Y" capes are about 8".  Though about 2/3 of the capes I get are already split all the way down the back.

You cant see any seam on my mounts, I guess mine are seamless or I'm just that good??  Just Kidding.

My uncles was from the 60's or 70's and was sewn all around the edges.
it always stayed on the floor right where the adults would get their toes in its teeth (LOL!)

I was just trying to get a round abouts on what one would cost if/when i finally kill one.
I hope so soon as i am dying for some Bear Jerkey again.

You can't see the seams on my mounts either.  I just prefer the short "Y" because it is less sewing.

Like I said it really depends on who you take it to.  Averege I would say is between $150 and $175.  You will find some higher and lower.
