cant get the shot off!!! he is huge and still alive
« on: March 23, 2009, 07:36:57 PM »
Every year during my archery elk hunt I see several bears including one VERY large one, but every time they are over 80 yards away, on the move , or have cubs. the large bear I find by the sound of stumps being torn apart, and often only get a glimpse of him. This has plagued me for the last three seasons. How do I get one step ahead with out cheating? Most people see the pictures of the big one and say just bait. I want to play it by the book but it seams someone gave the bear a copy. Ive tried bear sweet lure, fawn calls and lots of spot and stalk. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

Hunt sharp, hunt hard, or buy a gun!

:hello: Welcome to the site Dave, how about an introduction and a story about that 173 whitetail, preferably with pics ;)

Are you hunting the wonderful open country on the west side :chuckle: :chuckle: Ive gone out this time of year and cut some shooting lanes in spots that are too brush to get a shot. By the time bear season rolls around they won't care you were in there stomping around. I'd stick with the calling. Fawn in distress :dunno: :dunno:

Predator call.

And, I hope you're in a tree that they are not interested in climbing.

You also can go out to the same spot and go bear hunting with a rifle.

Good luck!

Kurt

Setup and call, let it loose on the call and don't stop, have some pepper spray in case of momma and a couple ankle bitters arriving.  It is as exciting as it gets for sure, but really be prepared to utilize the spray if you need to on a bear you have no desire to shoot, cause the one your calling might not come in, especially in late spring... (mating season).  Been surprised several times from the back side so have an over watch...  It is too cool...

hope your packing some iron if your gonna call with a bow..theres been a few times it took me a week to get the shorts outta my ass with close calls.I dont bow hunt but if I wanted to get close.I would find a drainage a big one with several others pouring into it.there are bears in there I promise.get in there in the morning and wait for the heat.they will get in the dark steep stuff and you can sneak up on them. just listen!!!!!!!!I walked up on a sow pawing on a stump, she stared at me for twenty yrs at no more than 20yrds.no shot till she turned and I dumped her.I thought it was a boar 22.5yrs old.you can move through the dark stuff so quietly.I hope ya get one theres nothing like here, total rush
