German Wirehaired Pointer / Deutsch Drahthaar
« on: January 07, 2019, 02:11:18 PM »
My son is 15 years old and he is hell bent on saving his money so he can buy and train his own bird dog.
I have reluctantly agreed and told him he is to do his own research and communicating with breeders and such. He started reaching out to a couple of guys this weekend one of which breeds Drahtharrs. He made the mistake in telling the breeder he was interested in owning a GWP and he was told that he needs to find someone that breeds that dog. He asked me about it and I told him I don't know what the difference is? I know when I look at my GWP's pedigree most all of the dogs prior to his parents were bred in Germany and I believe they are Drahtharrs. I'm not really sure though. I can see that the Drahtharrs may be bred to be a more versatile dog but they point and should be great duck dogs and good family dogs and look just like a GWP.

What do you guys think? Stick with GWP or open the search to include DD????

Neither........ a english setter....he can pick up chicks with a Purdy tri color English setter female. If I was looking between a wire or a DD I'd go with the wire.

The Deutsch Drathaar is bred to a German set of standards (VDD) German Breed Club.  The Line came to America and the AKC formed a new Breed designation for dogs bred in the US and they have a different breeding standard for what we know as German Wirehaired Pointer.

No
Would you think that would be a good fit for a younger trainer?

If a griff pup won't score chicks your son is a lost cause.

That being said I applaud the young man for his drive and goals.

Good luck to you both!

Give red rock drahthaars a look out of utah.  Ive owned a dd for a few years.  Shes a great family dog, loves the water retrieves ducks like a machine and runs for miles in the rocks for chukars.  She also bloodtrails which has came in handy at elk camp.  good luck in your search.

He received a really good reply from Jeff Funke at three devils. I think that is what he is going to shoot for. Now we will see if he can follow through with the working and saving money portion of buying a $2000 dog.  :o

That's a ton of lawns to mow.  :chuckle: I think its gonna be good for him if he follows through with it.

That’s awesome jager, I actually just talked to Jeff and Heidi both the other day. Heidi was telling me about a young fella that was very articulate with his words and actually wrote Jeff a letter maybe it was your boy?

Not with the quality of dogs Jeff puts out. My dog was pointing Phesants at 16 weeks. When he tells you his dogs have a high bird drive it’s no joke.

The deal is I’m footing the bill for the food and vet and such. So I told him to find the best bred dog he can and turn it into a Chukar hunting machine. I hope this works out for him.

Show the kid a picture of a chesapeake already

I had know idea that's what he's asking now. Pretty interesting the prices some breeds are fetching.
