Mixing Silhouette with full bodies- Thoughts???
« on: January 11, 2019, 12:07:21 PM »
I have 4 dozen full body Dave Smith goose decoys and i will be buying some more over time so I am simply looking to add bulk tell i get more full bodies. but the question is do you use silhouettes along with your full bodies ?
Does color matching bother you ?
Do you add them in with your full bodies or do you separate them
Is setup hard with them because you have to change the direction of each one ?
Just trying to learn a little bit about setup / incorporating them into what i already have

I'd have figured there was some kind of law prohibiting DSDs next to silos... lol.

That is a great set up. Be sure to set the silhouettes at different angles throughout your spread so that there is always something for the birds to look at no matter where they are coming from.

Good set up for late season ducks in fields too....

We have used silhouettes with full bodies with good results. We usually put the silhouettes on the outsides of the spread to bulk up the appearance from geese coming in from those sides. Once the birds get closer and overhead the silhouettes will mostly disappear from their view and the full bodies will take over their attention and finish them in. Setup is a breeze, just keep wind direction in mind and orient that way

hahahahha

as for setup like you guys were saying putting them on outside of the spread. are you saying that you keep all the full bodies closer to the blinds ? and running the silos out on the legs of ( for example a U pattern ) if your full bodies made up the base of the U ?

Also as my DSDs have a very real paint scheme to them do you ever concern yourself with a large color change between the two different styles ?

I know where we're hunting we mix Avians with Divebomb's and we have no problem. I know they're different, but not sure how extreme. You have dusky's where you hunt? I don't get to see them where I hunt really, but when I visit the in-laws they stick out like a sore thumb to me.

We try to keep more full bodies closer to where they're going to finish. We mix the silos out on the legs. One of my concerns when mixing them though - if you have too few full bodies to silos, with the disappearing effect can there be situations where the birds are seeing random geese off by themselves (the full bodies) as the silos appear and disappear? I just try not to overthink it or it will drive me insane. So far, we haven't had any issues.

We can put out about 120 fullbody honkers if we feel like it but when we want even more than that we will occasionally put out a couple dozen silos.  They work.

Silhouettes mixed with full bodies can be very very deadly.  Like posted above, put then at different angles.  When geese are circling it gives the appearance of moving geese.  Generally we keep mostly full bodies around the layouts because they help break up the outlines of the blinds.  If that doesn't concern you, the silhouettes can be mixed all throughout the full bodies.
