Short hunt
« on: January 12, 2019, 06:17:37 PM »
Drove an hour one way.  Perfect night.  Was taking a nice hound that a very nice person has loaned me to help my female get on track.  Decided to take him on a little get to know each other coon hunt.  Listens very well.  Anyways, hunted for about 15 minutes.  I notice his body language change and I could tell he got a bit excited....but he didn't open up.  Ran over a bank and was gone for about 30 seconds.  Came right back and was shaking his head.  Son of a B......quills.   :bash: :bash:  Grrrrr, I fricken HATE porkies.  Got quite a few out back at the car.  Had to drive home for some help to try and get the rest out.  Try tomorrow night for a different outcome!

Not trying to jack the thread but looking at the pic of that hound reminded me of my first hound I ever had.  His name was Zeb and I bought him from a guy in Shelton in the mid 90’s just before they banned him from doing what he was bred to do.  Me and my buddy put together a motley crew of hounds that everyone else had given up on and we thought we could make them into a pack.  One of the first nights we had then out we were roading with him on the hood and the rest in the box.  We came upon a creek and Zeb struck like crazy.  We stopped and let him off the hood and he ran downhill  barking like crazy.  He went down about 100 yards then paralleled the road for about 200 yards to our right.  He then started coming back to our left still hammering coming back to the creek.  Me and my buddy started walking down the road to our right trying to figure out what he was doing.  We could hear him barking like crazy about 100 yards down the hill  and then I heard the brush breaking coming up to the road we were standing on. My buddy was standing there in the dark looking down the hill and It finally dawned on me that this wasn’t a raccoon.  I hurried up to him and grabbed him and pulled him back about the time my headlamp saw a cow elk launch herself over the road where he was just standing. We were still shaking and about that time Zeb hit the road where that cow was.  As soon as he hit the road and saw us he rolled over on his back knowing he screwed up.  He eventually turned out to be one of the best dogs I ever owned.

:chuckle:  Awesome story!!  I took an old dog out with a nice young prospect.  He lead him right up to the skunk and then left before he got sprayed.  Came back and looked at me like hey it's his fault!  :)
