Waterfowl Retriever Training Day - Feb 24th, Monroe, WA

*** Training Day has been re-scheduled to Sunday, Feb. 24th pending the weather***

******* There is still too much snow on the ground so unfortunately we are canceling the training day for Feb.******

Whistling Wings HRC will be hosting their first training day of the year on Feb. 10th in Monroe, WA. If you are not familiar with the club we are a group of like minded retriever enthusiasts and hunters who meet to put on training days and UKC Hunt Tests.

Training Days are what the club is really about. Training days provide the opportunity to train and teach your dog how to be a retriever. The club brings out the trailer of equipment and birds (ducks) to give your dog the experience it needs for either hunting or Hunt Tests. Additionally, members provide members with the tips, things to work on, and any other information you need to help improve your dogs field work. Training days are perfect whether you're training your dog for upcoming Hunt Test Season or wanting to work on some skills for waterfowl season. If you don't have a dog or are interested in getting a dog, come out and see what it's all about.

Your first time is absolutely free. We don't want you to worry about anything but coming out and having a great time and learning something or teaching something new. Lunch is provided.

When: Feb. 10th, 2019
Where: 17126 State Route 203, Monroe, WA

How much is membership and what does a training day run? how many a year do you have?

We generally have 1 training day per month Feb thru Sept. Don't quote me on the amounts but I believe that membership for the year is $25 and then training day fees are like $10 there after or something like that. There are generally 3-4 setups. For Feb's training day we will have a setup  for started/seasoned dogs  , a setup for Finished dogs, a self serve station and an obedience clinic/station that will be hosted by a trainer who helps and competes in shutzhund (police dog stuff).

Everything is free your first time out and lunch which is grilled hot dogs or hamburgers is on us.

If you have any interest come on out. There is every level of dog, from puppies just getting their first duck to Master Hunters. Membership experience is also just as varied. It's a good time if you love dog stuff. I look forward to it each month!!!

This would be great for us and our dog.  Just wish it was closer.  Do you know of any other clubs that do this?  Or is there a directory somewhere we could search?  We are located in Grays Harbor.  Thanks.

Newaukum Retriever Club trains further south. That would probably be closest. They have a Facebook page you could check out. If you aren't able to find the email let me know and I can dig it up.

There are also clubs that train out of Sauvie Island but that my be just as far as Monroe from you.

Dang this is cool! Wish I could have found something like this when I was first starting out years ago. I hold firm to the belief that raining a dog is 70% training the owner and %30 on the dog. I may even fudge that number a bit and further toward the owner.

Books and videos are great but nothing beats real world training and examples. Most training programs tell you what to do but always forget to tell you what not to do or how to deal with a dog that wont play the game the way the one in the book or video seems to do.

If you are a novice trainer or an owner that wants to get better I would highly recommend attending something like this. So cool!!!

Doesn't start till 9:45-10 am. Setup and test dogs usually run earlier so that we can see how the setups will fair.

Not going to bring my dog but my son (10) and daughter (16) would really enjoy seeing how it all works...son is determined to run a dog some day. Is that still ok to come out?

That'd be great! There is a "check in" table in the barn so let them know this is your first time and see if they cant point you to Colin or Doug. Doug's the club president and one of his big goals this year is trying to get more young folks involved with the club so he'd be thrilled you folks decided to come out!

Hi Colin,

I have a 3.5 month old Lab. He doesn't have any experience with birds yet. I have never trained a retriever so I am looking at joining a group for guidance. Would this be a good fit for me?

I think it'd be a great fit. Like any type of volunteer run organization there are lots of people willing and able to help guide you it all depends on how you express your interest. Come on out and ask as many questions you can. I think some folks are warry of coming off as anyoying but I can tell you there's nothing dog poeple love talking about more than dogs!!!

We will have dead ducks and I could bring down a live bird of your dogs ready for an intro to live birds.

The best way to decide if it's a good fit is to come on out!!! We'd be happy to meet you and your dog!!!

Training Day will be re-scheduled due to the snow. Should be either the 17th or 24th depending on the weather. I'll post back up when we have an idea of what the weather will be like.

Thanks,

Colin

Awesome! I'll plan to join you guys. I'm just doing some basic obedience training with my pup right now. I really have no idea on how to turn him into a hunting dog so i'd love to learn from you guys.

How do you train with live ducks? I'd love to see what my pup does.

Well unfortunately there is still 4-6" of snow on the grounds and we are going to cancel Feb's training day which is a real bummer since I was really looking forward to kicking of the training season.

Next training day is in March.

Any of you see this crap that Oregon is trying to ban field trials and dog training? probably needs it's own thread but figure anybody here has a vested interest in this.

Oregon also wants to limit the amount of ammo a person can buy in one month. Guess what the limit is that they want.....20 shells.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Well, you wouldn't be able to buy a box of shotgun shells ever, since most comes with 25 rounds.

There are a bunch of crazy proposals down there.  :o
