Had a great day yesterday. Had a few dry stands at first, but the fourth was gold. Stopped short of a large group of ravens....has to be a carcass, I thought, and there have to be coyotes nearby. I went out ninety degrees to the activity, and found a place that I liked, except it was a bit tight.
I hit the mouth call a bit, noticing that the ravens had moved out the same direction that I had taken, but were still out about 200 yards. I sat with my rifle facing the ravens. In a minute or so, I saw a coyote trot out into view....by the ravens...he was looking for me. I gave a faint yip on the call, and here he comes! I see a second coyote fall in behind him, and got ready.
The first coyote topped a nearby ridge, about forty yards out, running right at me! I barked, growled, howled....all of which caused him to speed up. I waved, thinking a visual movement might stop him....nope. He looked me right in the eye, and kept coming.
I shot him running at about forty feet, and broke a front leg, just beneath his chest. He started spinning, and about the time I hit him again, the second coyote showed up, but kept going in a circle, going on past me. In all the confusion, I kinda think there was a third, but I was focused on finishing off the first, and can't be sure.
Later in the afternoon, I tried a location that I had never hunted, and took the pale male on the first stand, then crossed the road and out about a half mile, I called in a pair, and got them both.
Probably done for the season...I saw a pair today, hung up, breeding. Just didn't have the heart to interrupt! Besides, they looked a little raggedy, and I am all about fur.
By the way, there was no carcass...just the usual raven/coyote interplay gone wild!
