McCall, Weiser units?
« on: January 20, 2019, 05:15:12 PM »
Are these good elk units in comparison to other elk units in Idaho? Lots of tags available. Trying to decide where to put in for 2019. Also looking at property in both of these units. Looks like some beautiful country to live in.

Complete waste of time in my eyes. 5 years ago, it was opposite. Just some insight from a guy who has spent considerable time there over the last 5 years.

Go on the Idaho Fish and Game site and see how many elk were killed there and how many wolves were too......
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

idaho took the non res cap off weiser this year so the elk must be doing okay. Read the success numbers, people still killing elk.   Sure beats chasing spikes here in Washington.

They took the NR cap off last year as well. I can not speak to McCall, but spent 8 days in 32A during the second full week of September. Based off that small sample size and what I have learned since, I can not recommend it.

Both are pretty busy zones due to their proximity to Boise and the Oregon border (i.e lots of Washington/Oregon non residents go to them because they're a shorter drive to get to) but like elkchaser said, it's better than chasing spikes in Washington.

Hunted McCall in 2017.  If you have high expectations of seeing lots of elk like I had going into the hunt it's probably not for you.  I hunted 17 days and saw a total of 9 elk.

Hunted Weiser for 2 years, the elk are there but they are very skiddish.  We went 2/4 and then 0/4.  Cow tags seems readily available tho if your in it for the meat.

Same experience I had.  Hunted 5 days and saw two elk... :'(
