Muskrat
« on: January 28, 2019, 07:02:57 PM »
I am new to trapping and have gotten into a mess of muskrat. If I skin them and don’t have time to flesh, can I just roll the fur and freeze it I a plastic bag?

If you skin em it’s only a few more minutes to flesh em and put on a stretcher :twocents:

ya that ! But if you do freeze them do it fur out and fold them evenly and put them in double bags to keep them from getting freezer burned

Good point. I’ve gotten a couple beaver too and started getting behind. I’m new and slow for sure. Another question....  do scents work well for muskrat?  I thought all the ditches I have been seeing were beaver, (rookie.)  I guess it’s just a ton of muskrat and a few beaver. My guess anyway.

I personally have had mixed luck with scents for rats, I have far better luck just setting the travel ways and den holes, but there are a few guys here that do well with baited sets. Apple, carrot, parsnips seems to be the good bait, or another muskrat  :chuckle: I'm sure they do work to some extent just not super well for me

Define a “mess” of muskrat. In my opinion, scent or lure for ‘rats is a waste of money. Just put your colonies where the ‘rats are going to swim.

I’m no expert but in the area I have I would guess it would would measured in hundreds. What is the best size colony?  I am going to make a bunch and figure where best to put the darn things.

Isn't a "mess" enough for dinner. Use to be when we were fishing.
