25% of adult age bears do not hibernate on kodiak.  This year is a mild winter so more bears than normal are out.  Not gonna lie, it concerns me I am not a fan of the big bears.  An Island air pilot had some clients a few weeks ago that said they had a bear chasing goats around

In BC heavy griz country we slept with our .338's loaded next to us.  The unarmed guides in next tent laughed and said you won't have time for those if a griz wants in.  Very comforting.    Slept best when we had animals down as we knew the bears would be on the gut piles.
