Odd Idea
« on: February 03, 2019, 06:59:56 PM »
An idea just occurred to me and I thought I’d check in.

Have you ever heard of or seen someone attempting to make a decoy of themselves while predator hunting?

That is, rather than hiding, or trying to blend into the background, then ambushing after some misdirection, have you heard of or seen anyone attempting to wear colors and create shapes so that they appear to be an animal that might be interesting to a coyote?  Maybe a deer?

Any stories or history you guys know of?  Any thoughts?

Yeah, you'd have to do all orange and off-season to even see if it worked, wouldn't you?  :P

I saw a guy working with Steve Rinella do this successfully with a white mesh bag, they brought one that had decided to run back in with just flagging.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/greece/6850972/Man-dressed-in-animal-skin-shot-dead-during-hunt.html

This would probably be the result eventually, unless you did some kind of custom blaze orange and reflective one-off job.

I bet it would work like gangbusters though if you could eliminate the dangers of being shot, I don't think it's an accident that basically every indigenous culture makes a big deal out of dressing up like and acting like animals as part of their hunting rituals.

I really doubt you could do it with a spear.

Put on a deer mask and gloves, cover yourself in blood and drag yourself through the woods while making a distress call. If a coyote runs up then pull out a handgun.

Might work but in some areas you could get mauled by a cougar or bear. I'd probably want a backup shooter.

Is it a good idea? Probably not but would make a hilarious video.

Lol!  That's what I'm screaming!  I mean it would be insane, and a pain in the ass, and you'd have to work at it for a year, and you really might die trying this, but can you imagine how amazing that video would be?

I would love to see a bow hunter go full indigenous, put on deer skin and antler garb, and sidle up alongside some deer and then zap it as it's standing 20 yards away just as confused as it can be.  I'd watch that video over and over.  I'm confident if you learned the moves it could be done.

Hell, you could just do it where you record yourself throwing off the deer costume when the predator approaches, and just make a montage of predators looking as confused by your bizarre human magic as they could.  I can just see the bear in my mind's eye, stopping short as the deer somehow disappears and is replaced by a human, staring confused.  It would be wonderful.

So did you try it?

I think I’ll stick to looking like things other humans aren’t particularly interested in shooting for now, keep it in my back pocket as a plan H, but I may try the concept in a limited way.

I’m considering incorporating some of the concept into a pair of gloves or even my rifle, so that should I be spotted getting on target, the reaction might be interest rather than panic.  It’s worth a try anyway.  If it works out I’ll let you guys know.

It’s amazing how many guys over think coyote hunting. I went 3 for 3 Sunday morning and not one stand was there enough sage brush to hide in. Hell the first one I killed at 30 yards and I was sitting skylines on a knob in the wide open. Came right to the call.

Sit still, keep the wind, learn to call. It’s almost too easy

It's only over-thinking if the goal is to kill coyotes regularly without unnecessary mental and physical effort, which is not everyone's idea of the best and most enjoyable use of their time.

If the thinking and exploring possibilities is in itself enjoyable and part of the joy of the process, then exploring a notion like this one, even if only as an idea, is part of the fun and therefore worthwhile.

Oddball example:

Someone might be curious about whether it's possible to spear hunt coyote, and if so, how someone might actually pull it off.

Now, that's nuts, it would be an enormous amount of work and probably you'd never succeed if you tried.

If your goal with hunting coyotes is something along the lines of to kill coyotes without a lot of unnecessary work and effort, which is a perfectly good way to approach the thing, then the idea of spear hunting coyotes is completely pointless and crazy, and you might think the whole notion foolish.

But if your goal with hunting coyotes is something along the lines of learning about yourself, and coyotes, hunting, history, and life, and along the way to kill some coyotes as a way to keep your activity grounded and directed, then the question of spear hunting coyotes might be pretty interesting.

See where I'm going with it?

In everything in life, for me, half the fun is mulling it over, exploring the possibilities, being inventive, and trying new things.  That's just me, I realize, but it's sometimes other people too.  That's okay I think.

I've had a coyote came to me from over 400 yards away.  I was walking on an open hillside with orange on.  I set down when he was at 250 yards, let him get to 150 yards.  DRT.
