AR Builds Show Them Off!
« on: February 05, 2019, 02:42:27 PM »
I'm looking into building my own and would love some inspiration from the talented folks here on the forum. If you could show me some of your handy work and say what you love about it that would be great!

Will start off the replies with a classic: What are you going to use it for? What cal do you want it chambered in? etc...Will probably have better luck getting inspiration for what you want if you are more specific.

Big difference between somebodies Zombie killer for when the world ends, and someone else's coyote setup.

And not to promote other forums, but if you want to look at AR's of every conceivable iteration: https://www.m4carbine.net/

Could be interesting to see hunting builds. I've only ever really seen tactical setups as I don't know anyone personally that hunts with an AR.

This should be your first part in your AR build in Washington.

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Lets hope that Washington doesn't turn into California and we have to have this crap.
Ain't nothing better than the adrenaline you get when seeing an animal in the wild.

Coyote killer I wish I still had. Took my longest shot with one, 440 yards, 1 shot, spin, dropped dead.

Haha can tell that was awhile back because I still had a craptastic vortex on it. That scope was sent back for repairs twice before I sold it off
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.

Home Defense/fun gun was thinking 5.56 with a 10-12 inch barrel with a red dot scope and light mounted.

You're not allowed to say you don't know someone who hunts with an AR, it makes you an anti gun liberal  :chuckle:

This has always interested me I too would like to see others setups for inspiration on a possible future build.

I do. Unfortunately I do more AR building than hunting, so I've got several built for hunting that I've never actually hunted with. When I did hunt this fall, my son and I used a couple of the others that were not built as hunting guns, go figure. (He used my 9" 300 Blk pistol, I used the 12.5" 6.5 Grendel SBR shown below.)

Here are some pics. This first one is a 30 cal wildcat similar to the 30 American, using a 20" re-purposed Ruger 30/06 stainless sporter weight barrel and other light weight components. It weighs a bit under 7.5 lb.

This one is the 12.5" 6.5 Grendel SBR I hunted with this fall (without the light attached). The 129 ABLR worked great on one southern whitetail doe, but didn't shoot any other big game with it. I built this one a couple years ago before 12.5" Grendel barrels became popular, and it quickly became my favorite AR.

These two are matching 5.56 and 308 carbines. I haven't hunted big game with either one of these. The 5.56 is a "recce" pattern that I've shot a lot, and the 308 is there mostly just because I wanted one.

I know I should be outraged that a product like this even has to exist, but I really like that idea! I used to shut off the gas block on my 6.5 BRX and 270 AR uppers and use them as single shots just so I wouldn't have to chase my brass all over the place.

I just like its simplicity and easy to convert back and forth.

Ever tried just hanging a hat on your scope to avoid chasing brass? It's not ideal everywhere, but if you're shooting in one position, it drops the brass right at your feet (or next to the rifle if prone).
