Cat hunt bonus
« on: February 08, 2019, 01:26:32 PM »
Well just got home from Montana helping my buddy with his outfitter business in Victor Montana( http://mtriversandridges.com). General cat season opened the first of February and conditions were tough with rock hard snow and no weather forecasted for a couple days. Day one was just a lot of snowmobiling and covering road looking for any cat and wolf tracks ( every road we ran had new and old wolf tracks there’s a wolf problem in the east and west fork of the bitterroots right now). Day two started slow no new snow and tough conditions still but finally cut a set of track on top of are sled tracks from day before. We  set up a game plan for one guy to release the dogs and the other guy to to set up try to keep close to them as the chase progressed and watch for wolves or fresh wolf sign. Dogs did there job and freshen the track and the race was on up over the ridge down the back side across a big drainage and into the cliffs race over. The next two hours spent getting dogs off the bluffs and everyone home safe for the day.

In the mean time are second hunter was being entertained with a little bit of afternoon music. the roads they were driving had fresh wolf tracks so they set up at the end of the meadow. James howled and got a immediate response and was able to call them within a 100 yard but no visual.

Heavy rains through out the night 😡 . What tracks we cut were washed out no scent. James and his hunter went back to there drainage and low and behold they catch a glimpse of something crossing the road. So they proceeded to walk the edge of the road looking for what crossed and there he was just sitting and watching them from about 75 yards away with no worries.  BANG our Texas hunter just smoked a wolf 😜👍. To say the least he was one happy hunter 96 lbs male .

The rest of hunt was hit and miss. The snows continued to fall and we just weren’t  able to get a good track to run the rest of the hunt but over all everyone had a great time.

I just got back from a cat hunt in Montana also. I would agree with your statement about the wolves. We cut a lot of fresh wolf tracks also. My buddy runs with James sometimes and we heard his client had shot a wolf. Nice work! That's a dandy. Too bad the cat chase didn't turn out, but great work on getting him on a wolf.
