Frontier FiOS internet?
« on: February 13, 2019, 11:30:47 AM »
Does anyone have this that can provide a review?  I'm tired of paying $100 a month for marginal Comcast and was thinking of switching but don't want to get a 2 year contract with something that is the same or worse.

Thanks.

I have it, its TERRIBLE! I've had Comcast, Wave, and now Frontier. I would change providers in a second if I had a choice but unfortunately Frontier is all that is available to me. My advice is to stick with Comcast.  :twocents:

We have Frontier Fios, as far as I'm concerned they're the same as any other cable/internet company. Some people like them, some don't. I'm indifferent other than I pay half of what I paid for comcast, 4 years ago before I switched. We stream Netflix/Amazon, and usually have other devices running. No bandwidth issues.

Frontier FiOS was great when it was Verizon FiOS, but since Frontier took over I would say the customer service, support and internet service are comparable to Comcast. I could switch to  Comcast, but in my opinion it would not be worth the effort just to trade one crappy service provider for another crappy service provider.  :twocents:

That's where I am at, their cost is less than half of Comcast now.  What download speed are you getting?  I'm on Comcast's fastest plan and it is testing about 55-75 MB/s down.  I have it for work and need a fast reliable connection.

I'm not entirely sure to be honest with you. We had a tech come to our place back in December because we were having issues and he mentioned that we were on the slowest high speed available and that we should be able to up that at no charge. I haven't done anything about it because we don't have any issues.

last year, we had the same problems with internet speed, had the frontier crew come out.  The tech heard the grandkid and asked if we had a monitor, yes we did, he unplugged it and wow, speeds back up to what they used to be.  Too many signals in the house, just a thought for ya.

To really know, you need to connect to he router with a cable. He test you did doesn’t say if the performance is due to your router or your wireless.

 :yeah:

You will never get as much throughput on a wireless connection as through a physical connection, and if your neighborhood use a lot of wireless access points/devices and/or are careless with what channels their access points operate on, your throughput can be severely degraded below the levels supported by your internet provider.

Ideally, if you want to determine whether or not your service provider is to blame, you should test with a PC or laptop plugged directly into the ISP. Bypass all of your routers/switches/firewalls. If you are still getting bad performance you can go to your ISP with definitive proof that the issue is on their end. In my experience as a network support engineer with over a decade of experience though, more than 90% of network throughput issues are a result of poorly optimized or improperly configured consumer network equipment, with sub-optimal wireless configurations causing the worst degradation in performance.
