New Zealand DIY

Well, I just booked my ticket for April 8-23 for New Zealand! Anyone on here ever done this before? I’m going with a couple buddies, one went last year for tahr and chamois. He got dropped off by a helicopter for a few days and killed a couple good animals. I think we are planning on doing the same, but id also like to hunt red deer. We are staying around the northwest side of the island.  Anyone have any tips on finding stags? It should be Primetime for the roar. I’ve applied for all the permits to hunt the open ground, and the firearm permit is in the works. Thanks for any tips and I’ll be sure to keep you all posted!

Kids bought us a trip in March/April of 17.  Awesome trip.  Took 3 weeks and rented a campervan and saw just about everything and then a Stag hunt at the end.  So Cool.  Would go back in a heartbeat.  South Island?  Mine was not public ground, but the roar was going good.

Ya we will be on the South Island. We’ve got houses rented in 3 different areas, I think they are all around the northwest side of the South Island.

Never done it but interested to hear how your trip goes. I don't much care for exotics but a free range red deer hunt always draws me in a little. Good luck hope you have a great time.
