First time Montana applicant

So for MT do you just apply for a deer and elk tag (combo?) and hope for the best? And what if you want to try for a specialty deer and/or elk tag. Do that at the same time? I believe I read somewhere on here rhat best odds for NR is go for the elk/deer combo?

yes, you can apply for deer only, elk only or deer/elk combo. At that time, you can apply for limited entry tags which are first dependent on drawing general tag. To make it more complicated, you then have another option to return all or a portion of general tags if you don't draw limited entry but only get 80% refund.

Agreed with this and also spend the cash to get the preference point. That way, if you don't draw a general tag this year, you are almost guaranteed to draw next year

Trying to hunt deer and elk in one trip can be very difficult if you only have a week or so to hunt, especially if it's your first time in a new area. I would suggest that you pick one species and apply. Focus on it and enjoy the hunt without worrying about having time and opportunity to chase another species.
The deer/elk combo does have better draw odds, but you can also buy a bonus or preference point and your draw odds for just elk or deer will be very good.
I would urge you to call Montana fish and wildlife, they have been excellent to us when we have called to ask questions. They can give you clear and direct answers most of the time.

I will call them, thank you. I have lots of time as I am retired. The only thing that could mess me up is if I get selected for Wa tags as I have a ton of points for moose, sheep and goat. I hope I have to deal with such a problem!

I actually called to see what would happen if I apply as NR, get selected and then became a resident by hunting season. She said she has never been asked that before but said to just go ahead and hunt as a non resident. Sounds right but geez now days you wonder if you can get in trouble for stuff like that.

It says somewhere in the regs but you have to be a resident, I believe, for like 6 months before being able to get resident tags

I wouldn't be worried that MT would get too bothered if you hunted on a $1,000 tag instead of the resident tag because you bought it early.

Make sure you dont have any other state's residents tags for 2019 if you plan on buying Montana resident tags.

And that may be the problem. I would have to surrender Wa tags I guess.

That was my issue last year. Would have happily surrendered them but I drew a quality tag.

Yes it is six months for residency. That could happen if I find a place soon but it is a long shot. I am starting my search right after the 1st so to find a place, make a deal and close on it most likely would not happen before the season starts. I am paying the NR fees for MT and would like to keep my WA resident tags one more year anyway. If it did happen it will be interesting what WDFW would say???

I dont think they can say anything. On a side note, I just bought all my Montana sportsman tag (deer, elk, antelope, bear, upland and fishing license) for $100 including elk and deer application fees. If your a resident its pretty cool how affordable it is to hunt in your state.

Just finished putting me and my son in. $1,800 + and that’s with a youth combo price. A lot but worth it. Have a great time every year.

That’s a lot cheaper than what I will pay for Washington and a lot better experience.
I am putting in for deer next week. So how long after March 15th will it take to find out if we draw? It’s probably on here but I can’t read JK

Not automatically. Have to select the preference point option and pay 50 bucks.

Yes, minus your application fee or any points you buy. The 80% is if you draw general, not special and turn the tag back in

just applied for my first time NR mt deer combo.  I worked there for a couple years so am familiar with a half dozen areas. Only had time to waterfowl hunt before...hopefully I get the tag!

Yes sir. First person in group says they are applying as a group. After you pay you will get an email with reciept and on that will have you party number. Give that to your buddy before he applies and you will be set!!

I just put in for the big game combo today - it's been four or five years since I hunted there but my boys live there in Three Forks and Bozeman so they're pretty dialed in on where to pitch our camp. I'll be going back whether I draw or not but it'll be more fun if I get to hunt.
