Merriams?
« on: February 15, 2019, 12:31:03 AM »
I'd like to try for Merriam's turkeys for the first time this spring. What can you folks tell me about hunting for this subspecies? I've hunted both Rio's and Eastern's in the past. I love hunting Rios due to where they frequent (river bottoms) and how well they respond to calls. I hate hunting Eastern's due to them being much more harder to call.

Anyways, what can you folks tell me about this subspecies? Habits, calling, subspecies, frequented terrain, etc? I'd love to get one this spring. The white tips on the tail feathers happen to be my favorite.

I haven’t hunted easterns or Rios but in my experience merriams are pretty vocal if they haven’t been pressured too bad. They seem to like a wide variety of terrain as they are all over the western 2/3rds of klickitat county with still a decent number on the eastern third. I have hunted them in some really steep country.

:yeah: I find merriams to be pretty dang vocal. You'll find a ton of birds hanging around fields in the NE corner of the state, but there are also a fair amount that live in steep mountain terrain. Go almost anywhere in the Colville national forest and you'll find pockets of birds

Merriams are the most vocal of all of subspecies in Wa state. A lot of fun when they hammer ya. NE corner is loaded with them and the best bet, when i hunted over there I normally hunted the first week of May. Less people and the birds were still excited to play.

If you Facebook the Lake Washington NWTF and the Washington State NWTF pages.  Also under the WDFW website in hunter education.  They have clinics listed.  So far they haven't contacted me yet so nothing on their website as of yet.  Sorry it is taking me sometime to reply.  I am in Nashville at the NWTF national convention.

3/4 of all birds killed in WA are killed in the NE corner, lots of birds.
