New turkey hunter

So, other than my OIL tags I’ve killed everything but turkeys and Cougars in Wa. I’m thinking of taking my quad out to Colokum and seeing if I can get on turkeys this spring... am I on the right track?

Check the harvest records and you will see that the harvest in the NE corner is like 15 times the Colockum  (don't quote me;   look it up.).

If you want to kill a turkey (and don't have the Colockum birds figured out), you're much better off going NE.   Also much more public land that actually holds turkeys.

If you're more into the quad ride, the Colockum sure is pretty.....   and its closer.   :-)

My 15 times more turkeys killed in the NE corner was actually close.

Look up the 2018 regs.  They have harvest numbers for years up to 2016.   
2106 numbers:

NE CORNER:   3,421
COLOCKUM AREA (larger than just Colockum):    270

It is a loooooong drive for birds, but that's where the birds are.

There's some great quad riding in the Colockum, if you cant to try to find turkeys there.......

I have hunted the Colockum and the Quilomene for birds the last 3 years. Only one Tom to show for it and only a couple other chances, birds are few and far between. There are better places for sure. On a good note, I never got boogered by another hunter

I would go NE and leave the quad at home unless you’re using it to pack in camp somewhere.

there are obviously more birds out in the NE but there are also decent pockets in 328/329. The key to any turkey hunting where there isn't a high abundance is having a good sounding, loud turkey call. Volume helps you cast a wider net when locating. If you don't have a roost picked out to hunt, the name of the game is locate, listen, move, rinse and repeat, sun up til sun down. Having a turkey call that A. sounds like a turkey and B. has enough volume is going to give you the edge.

Spend enough time in the Colockum and you'll find birds to hunt. I've stumbled upon a few big groups of them every spring while shed hunting, but can never turn them up come turkey season.

2 hr drive compared to 6 though...and some really cool country, I say go scope it out.

In my opinion, camo clothing with facemask, a quality turkey call, and a shotgun. Have killed with just calls and no decoys.

And drive to find a Central Wa Gobbler

I would go NE and leave the quad at home unless you’re using it to pack in camp somewhere.

You can drive quads on most roads in Stevens county with the right licenses.
