I don’t want to muddy up this thread, but I wouldn’t be for OTC spring bear hunting.
A big part of what I love about the spring bear hunting is that there is minimal pressure.
Totally agree!  Rather have a quality hunt less often than a sea of orange every year!

Orange is not required.  And you really think the woods are going to be packed with bear hunters when the season goes from april 1st through june 15th?  An open spring bear season in ne wa wouldnt be about a quality hunt, it would be about addressing our predator issues to protect our ungulates.

They could always leave some units around the state draw only, for your "quality hunt."  Just like deer seasons.

The spring bear draw hunt is not about a quality hunt, it’s about limiting the number of bears killed. There is such a large number of permits in the NE corner because of the over population of bears. My sons drew one of the units with the highest number of permits last year. Between the two boys, I spent over 4 weekends hunting last spring. We did not run into another hunter, so I’m not too concerned about the otc season being too crowded.

I would rather draw a spring bear permit every 2 years than a quality buck permit every 20 years.... who is with me?
draw every 2 years  :yike.  I'm on year 8 and still won't draw.

Exactly.  We need to kill bears.

Since the Kapowsin access fee went from the $100 to now required to buy the $300 full access I called and made request to change my kapowsin permit request to just a point. Will see if it happens. Don't want the stupid permit now. I guess I should have looked at the tree farm regs prior to applying. I hope it gets changed and allows someone else the opportunity to draw their "dream" tag.  I will just go to Ideeho and buy over the counter if I really need a spring bear fix.

Its totally highway robbery what Hancock did with permits this year... not only did they dump the reduced spring bear fee of 100$ and are charging 300$, they took away the family pass so now EVERY adult entering has to pay for a separate permit. They should absolutely loose any and all tax breaks they get if that is how they are going to treat access... its absurd!!!

I could care less about there tax breaks.
Tree farms should get told to pound sand on bear tree damage intell they decide to open access to spring permit bear hunters.
No more bear feeding stations
No running hounds for spring bear.
Intell they grant access to spring bear boot hunters.

I don't understand why Spring bear isn't OTC or at least Unlimited draw (that way the state still gets the application fee income).  It has been my experience that bears are much easier to hunt in the late summer/early fall. Find ripe berries and there will be a preoccupied bear nearby. Fall tags are OTC and they give out 2 tags! (westside) Why in the heck have I been waiting 6 years to draw a spring tag? When you really stop to look it over, it's clear that WDFW "Biology" is really Economics 101. Biggest example of this is the stocked rainbow trout fishery and the lowland lakes opener.

You want to mandate how private landowners how to mitigate damage to resources on their property? Boy, that's a great precedent to set.

Maybe if slobs didn't leave trails of beer cans on all of their roads, access would be more reasonable  :dunno:

Yeah. How hard is it to just keep the cans in the bed and throw them away when you get back home.  ;)

I'm not mandate anything ,The spring bear hunt is a damage hunt for bears that are peeling or just to lower poulations to reduce damage.
If a private land owner has tree damage and doesn't allow access then that's there problem not WDFW.Private land can allow spring bear Hunter and get some benefit to tree health,or they can suffer tree damage. In the near future it will be a decision they can make.

Have you heard that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make em drink.
You can give out thousands of bear permits , but if timber company's don't allow access it does no good for tree damage. :twocents:

The private timber company just then have licensed trappers come in and kill off as many as permitted by the WDFW.  It gets taken care of behind the scene.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!
