Another AR question..... longer stock?
« on: March 05, 2019, 09:20:46 PM »
So, I've picked up a few AR's and am enjoying playing with them.

But I'm a big guy (6'8"), and I end up all hunched over when shooting.

What's the best way to get a longer stock?

I need 2 - 2  1/2 more inches.
(keep it clean)

Thanks,

Dan

They make extended buffer tubes for the collapsible stocks. I think midway has them

Or you can go to a magpul adjustable.

That depends what you have right now. Tell us what you're starting with, and we can help you better.

One sure fire way to go longer is a Magpul PRS stock; LOP on those is pretty long even in the shortest position. They come with a weight penalty of about 2 lb though and will run you ~$200 give or take a bit.

How are you mounting your AR?
How close are you snugging up?

I have trained in CQB with guys who a 6'10" and they still put their nose almost to the charging handle (as taught by most military training) with the stock extended to fit.
That does not mean you can't use what works for you, as long as you are consistent.
I started with nose to charging handle and shot that way for years with good results.
I now prefer about 2 inches back, and each stock is a little different, and all mine have Red Dots or scopes.
The nose to charging handle, was originally for iron sights so you have the same sight picture each and every time. Clothing and body armor can effect your consistent cheek weld, so it is good to practice with what you would be wearing.
If using a Red Dot, eye on target and bring dot up to superimpose on target.
Find a comfortable spot for your cheek weld, that offers the best FOV and sight picture, and use it always, always, always.
Only 2 defining forces sacrificed themselves for you:
The American Soldier and Jesus Christ. One died for your freedom, the other for your soul.

My rock,
He trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle.

I use scopes.

I get in there pretty snug, but then the fully extended stock is still too short to get to my shoulder.

Here is a thread at AR15.com that discusses a few options for large people or people with longer arms and hat might be helpful.

One advantage to learning how to shoot in the military, is everyone learns exactly the same way.

One disadvantage to learning to learning how to shoot in the military, is everyone learns exactly the same way.
