Hornady XTP bullets for hunting
« on: February 24, 2019, 03:05:06 PM »
Hey all,

I bought some hornady XTP rounds in 250grn @ .452 and they wont cycle through my 1911.

While looking over some of my bloodline sabots I noticed they are the same diameter as what I was shooting during deer season this year. If these are any good I might have a lifetime supply of muzzy rounds, or maybe I will load em up for my 45LC ruger.

Anyone have experience using these rounds in a sabot? Which sabot can I order for these?

Cheers all, its almost target shooting season!

The deer are exactly where you find them, and no where you dont!

I haven't used them in a muzzle loader but I've shot hundreds of that particular bullet in various handguns ranging from 45 Colt to 460 S&W. I'm not sure what velocity you're expecting in the rifle but the 250 XTP expands really well between 800-1500 fps, but I've had them come apart with impacts over 1500 fps.

I may have some pictures of expanded bullets with different impact velocities. I'll see if I can find them.

I have had very good success with .45 cal 300gr. XTP bullets for both deer and elk using a Harvester crush rib sabot!

I would think for deer sized game, the regular XTP would be ok, if you aren’t running a max charge. I’ve shot the 300gr XTP mags, which shot well in my musket and will hold up to full charge velocities.

I have used my pistol bullets to foul my bore.  The surface area seams to be too short for good accuracy...at least in my rifle....need 300gr or better.

Shot a decent pile of animals with the XTP's.  I use the mmp hph24 abbots.  They are a fantastic option for the smoke pole
