I have shot 3 bears in that unit, my father has shot 15, the rest of my family/friends 5 bear, 23 bears in total. None of these were in the Spring and were all from the fall season. I will tell you that there are bear all over in that unit. Find water, find the bear.

I can't offer much advice, I've only hunted it once and killed a bear within 2 hours.  Good luck!

Green grass is already starting to show when driving down 395 looking across to it. Last year I saw quite a few by the river. Past orient on sand creek and such. Looking the unit over on google it looks pretty good! I haven’t explored too much over there though.

It goes from rugged, to thick to sorta open. I lived in Curlew and would go over there and hunt for something different to do.

Buy an RRCALL and go calling. Best have 2 sets of eyes.

The Elbow Lake area has been logged/thinned.

Keep an eye out for GRIZZLY and WOLVES......

I spend alot of time in this unit. Been a few spring bear hunts I would not waste my time if you are having to travel long distances or have limited time to hunt by hunting in April or even the first part of May. I have seen bears in April, but not a ton and they are not super active fast forward to later part of May and June and bears get real active to the point its hard to not see them if you are in the mountains. One day in june I wasnt hunting I was checking trail cams in 80 deg weather and almost ran 3 over in the road and saw a total of 8 that day.

My new rifle wont be done until may 1. Then i have to sight it in. Not even thinking about going until the 3rd week of may.

I hope to get up high and get some vantage and just glass. Spotting them is just as fun as getting a bear to me. Im about 4.5 hrs away so i will be sorta close. I will go enough days to get it done.

I have called in several bears in this unit in the fall with a predator call.  LOTS of fun!!  Shot my first bear ever called in right between the eyes at about 10 to 12 yards.  Pretty exciting way to hunt!

Good plan.     Keep in touch, might have fresher info by then.  Of course it will be from an unsuccessful bear hunter.  I put in a lot of time last year, and talked to several tag holders.  It wasn't a slam dunk for sure.  Don't think I seen a bear until May.
