i am new at Turkey hunting. i need a little help with buying a new choke for my 12 gauge mossburg. i was thinking about the primos tightwad, truglo gobble-stoper, or HS under taker?

what would be the best one for a newb?

The only true way to know which will work best in your gun is to try them out with different loads to see which combo produces the most consistent pattern at a given range. I know that my 870 is good out to about 35 yds with a 3" Federal shell using #5 shot with a Primos Jelly Head. My wifes Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag likes Remington Nitros with the factory choke and it's good out to 40 yds. I think that you'd be fine with any of those chokes. Just remember to pattern them.

Depends on what size shot you plan on using. Most chokes have retriction sizes....like .655 etc that they recommend using with various sizes of shot. As an example one of the guns I shoot a winchester 1300 with a Kick's Gobbling Thunder on it with a .655 choke size for 6's which I perfer. Death machine...to say the least.
Remember to shoot at the neck head area..........

They all will work. Just depends on what your gun likes. I chose 5 to split the difference between more pellets and bigger pellets.

I perfer 6's....it's a numbers game......the more pellets coming out the end of the barrel and choke equates to more pellets hitting the neck and head. Size of the pellet is relative to me as I never shoot over 30-35 yards, so I'm not looking for more mass. Just an ethical thing with me...potential wounded turkeys are not my cup of tea.

If you have a back bored barrel witch i think mossburg is you want to go with a .680 choke. I have a MAD MAX by drury game calls works great.

T is big. Not sure exactly what size but sort of like 4 buck. You use bird shot for turkeys. Normally 4-5-6. T shot is not a good idea.

Okay guys let me throw a wrinkle in this question. If you are only hunting for a full size mount what should you use so as to not destroy the bird for mounting?

Tough question..I would consider shooting it with a bow or a 20 gauge. If you are planning on using original head and have it freeze dried. If not the fake heads are very realistic..Then it wouldn't matter..I am not a taxidermist however. One of the biggest mistakes is not cleaning the head after you kill it and keeping it moist and covered. Many guys that have great mounts also get them to the taxidermist that day...

Shoot them at 35 or 45 yards and get to the bird quick dont let him flop around. Clean the blood on the head. Put a sock on its head and put bird in plastic sack. get it to taxidermast.

I have a backbored Mossberg 935 12 GA with a Tru Glo Turkey Choke. It patterns very well out to 40 yards with 3.5 inch 6 shot.

Aaron, 3 in, 12 GA will do the job just fine. Just get a turkey choke for your gung and a few different types of turkey loads in 6, 5 or 4, and go try them out to see which load patterns best in your gun at various distances i.e, 25 - 40 yards. With the right combo you be well on your way to your first jelly headed gobbler.

Probably comes down to personal preference.......Realtree, Mossy Oak....whatever. You'll be turkey hunting in the spring so patterns with greens in them will help. They all work....it's the movement that will get you busted everytime. If you have to move, do it in slow....I repeat....slow motion. Never know what may be watching you....lol.

Lots of good advice in these threads.

Get a good book on gobbler hunting so you have an understanding of the methods, safety, and ethics behind the sport. The TV shows want to convince you that it a certain call or a certain gun, or decoy etc that makes the difference. In reality 75% of it is about you as a hunter and your woodsmanship.

I wouldn't be overly concerned w/ going out and getting a new "Turkey" choke. I admit I've got my gun set up to shoot out there quite a ways but in reality many if not most of the birds you kill are going to be within 30 yards. And in alot of those cases a 20 gauge with even a mod choke would probably be just fine. I'm not suggesting you use that just making a point.

Pattern your gun with the standard full choke that it came with using I high quality 3" Turkey load of 6s. I'm guessing you'll find that it patterns great out to 35 yards maybe even farther.

As far as camo goes... they'll all work. Staying still is way more important than the camo you use. I'm a huge believer in Predator and ASAT. Army woodland, Cabela's outfitter are good too. Or you can go with the fashion camo... like realtree, kings, and mossyoak

If your gun has a screw in choke, I would opt for buying a turkey extra full choke ASAP!!

The mod will not cut it for any shots over 20 yards or so. Your first hung up Tom at forty yards and you'll be wishing you spent the twenty bucks on a turkey choke.
