Flea and tick time

So today I had to remove a tick off one of my Brittany's. What type of flea and tick medicine are people using and where are you purchasing it?

We have been using nexgard. Found 18 on our lab two weeks ago, a friend found 15 on his lab too! 
Only two Saturday.

I got a bottle of Tea Tree essential oil, I've been putting it my own shampoo and I like it. 


I'm thinking about putting it in the dogs shampoo too to help with ticks,  tea tree and peppermint oil is suppose to help prevent ticks from burrowing in through the fur and latching on as they hate that stuff.

I use mostly mane and tail shampoo for the dog

Be very care using tea tree oil on your dogs. It can be highly toxic. It needs to be diluted. About 20 drops per 1/4 cup of water. Pets can get very sick just licking it off of their coats.

Was recommended by my dad, who is a vet, and I've been really impressed. Zero ticks in 2.5 summers, between Spokane, Cle elum, Naches and the west side. Chocolate lab.

I'm doing 10 drops per 8oz, so for a 32oz bottle of shampoo I'm adding 40 drops total. 

32oz is 4 cups.


At your dose that would be 320 drops in a 32oz bottle     


I do need to research it more, I wouldn't give it to my dog unless I'm sure then I'd try a test first.

looks like vets reccomend no more than 1% diluted solution.


40 drops per 32oz bottle is 2%

20 drops per 32oz is 1% dilution, so I'll try that

Might want to worm your dog too, if the tick had a chance to bite it could have passed roundworms. I cant remember the exact details, but ticks can transfer roundworms, you can probably google it and learn what you need to know.

We tried some all natural tick spray on our dogs last spring before a shed hunting trip, main ingredient was peppermint oil plus some other stuff that I don’t remember. Picked up over 40 ticks between the two of them that day, including many that were burrowed in the few days after.  needless to say the spray went in the trash

Haven't used bravecto, our vet at companion animal clinic has our chocolate lab on nexgard tablets. Same type of tablet as bravecto, seem to work great too! The first weekend shed hunting we hadn't given her a tablet and she picked up 18. Since her first tablet we haven't found anymore except for three dead ones caught in her fur.

Our vet switched my WPG (and the rest of the clinic) over to Credelio this year and it's worked just as well as Nexgard, but it's significantly cheaper per dose. The vet said the only reason she stopped prescribing the Nexgard was because of the price difference, not the effectiveness.

I brush 5-10 ticks off of my WPG every day when we get home from our 1 hour walk. She does tend to pick up more ticks than other dogs though just because of her long coat.

I've been putting tea tree oil in my shampoo just for ticks, so far this year I've only had one tick stuck on me and it was on my belly....because when I came out of the woods my tee shirt lost some length to it and my stomach was then exposed 


"oh I'm not going far, I'll leave the pack at home"  ya, 5 miles later deep in the woods....ah crap.


Had another one in my hair, but it washed right out and didn't bite in or latch itself on. 
I wasn't wearing a hat and was busting brush off any roads.  So I dunno if the tea tree oil worked but I think it did help keep it from latching on.


I made a thread earlier about tea tree shampoo for the dogs, decided not to do it.

my vet has us on heartworm chewable tabs too. says that around the state there are cases. anyone have issues there?
