If I had bigger more open areas I'd keep using weights over a pole.   Problem is some birds fly better than others so you can never dial in the weight. 


So I put up a pigeon pole, promptly found out that you can't have weeds than hang up the string from the pole to the bird or it doesn't get anywhere 
tall smooth grass with no weeds or other branched vegetation to snag a string, and the pigeon pole would be ideal. 


I got a bunch of birds I'm re-homing right not, so I'm not sure which ones have chicks/eggs or paired with the one sitting on the nest so I'm loathe to kill any just yet. 
Soon as they're flying and homed I'll go to launchers and dizzying and won't need to worry about them getting away.

 All of that nonsense is hokey and fake. "The absolute cheapest part of birddog training is the thing thar people cheap out the most on." Bob Pettit told me that and he's trained 10 times the dogs  as everybody combined on this board. Work your dog on 1 bird a day for 90 days, start killing after they stand still with no pressure to do so or commanded to do so. 90 pigeons x 3 bucks a bird = less than the price of an Ecollar. Homers breed like rats, get 5 pairs and you'll have birds coming out your ears.

I don't disagree with that at all, but its tough for me to find the dang things in bulk.   

I've got about 20 of them now and just using the pigeon pole until I get them breeding and homed, it's a temporary stop gap for me. 

Can't wait until my pigeon factory is up and running full tilt.

$3.00 pigeons?  How long has it been since you bought any? I have already gone through 1050 this year. I would of loved to have paid that. Hook me up with you secret source. And no I don't use pigeon poles, unless I have to rehab a bird. Shy/ Gun shy dog. I still use some of Bob's other techniques mainly for FF. But no he has not trained more dogs then all of us combined on here.

I pay $3.00 a bird (homers). Anything more for pigeons is beyond a rip off. They are cheap to feed, tough, and if you put some wood shavings down they breed like rats. I built a pigeon house based on some plans from Lion Country Supply years ago and the latest batch I bought over a year ago keeps on breeding.

Bruce Minard at HiFive Kennels in Michigan had one he was showing on Facebook a few weeks ago. Showed both a dog working a bird attached to one and what he had made it with.

Bruce has done well in Cover Dog trials, the tool can’t be all bunk.

This is honestly the cheapest and easiest way to do it. Just keep popping birds from the launcher until the dog starts pointing them. It’s also the one thing most have a hard time with because it takes time. The dogs need the repetition to learn how to handle birds.
