Blood everywhere’ as mom tackles mountain lion biting 7-year-old boy, family says
BY DON SWEENEY

APRIL 01, 2019 09:26 AM

When mom Chelsea Bromley went to check on a ruckus in the yard where her 7-year-old son Zack had gone to play Friday afternoon, she discovered a young mountain lion had pinned the boy to the ground with its jaws clamped on his arm, Global News reported.

“She jumped on top of this thing, but it just wouldn’t let go of Zack’s forearm, so she then had to pry this cougar’s jaw open,” said dad Kevin Bromley, according to the publication. “She told me she couldn’t do it for two or three seconds, but then she screamed ‘help’ and it just let go and ran off. And there was blood everywhere.”

A helicopter airlifted Zack to a hospital, where he received stitches for bite wounds on his arms and head, CBC News reported.

Kevin Bromley said he “started bawling” as soon as he saw his “stoic” son in the hospital, Global News reported

Ben York, a British Columbia conservation inspector, confirmed Chelsea Bromley had wrestled the mountain lion off her son, The Globe and Mail reported. That left some “minor bite marks on her hand,” York said.

Authorities later tracked and killed two young mountain lions in Lake Cowichan on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, The Cowichan Valley Citizen reported.

“The cougars were both very emaciated, very skinny and in very poor overall condition, very light for their size,” York said, according to The Vancouver Courier.

“We don’t know what might have caused that,” York said, adding that a necropsy will be conducted to determine whether the mountain lions had suffered from disease or injury, according to the publication.

He speculated the mountain lions might have been orphaned and left to fend for themselves, The Vancouver Courier reported.

While some reports said both mountain lions had attacked Zack, Kevin Bromley said his young daughter had reported seeing the second nearby during the attack, Global News reported.

Mountain lion sightings are not unusual on the island, CBC News reported.

“It is really horrible to hear when you have a child actually attacked like that,” said neighbor Jeff Bain, CTV News reported. “We hadn’t heard any warnings in the past few days from our dogs or anything in the past few days so it’s kind of a surprise.”

Saw that. Nasty big cats have no fear in this state. Need some hounds striking on them again to get their fear/avoidance of humans back on track!

But wdfw is going to ignore the call from the dozens of concerned citizens who spoke up about their cougar concerns at the commission meeting in spokane.  We will be completely blown off.  I wrote a 3 page letter about our cougar problem and sent it to the commission and the director.  I received no response, and doubt if it was even read.  This is the 4th lion attack on humans in less than a year.  The first 2 being fatal.  WA, OR, ID, BC.  Its only going to happen more.

Put more cows out, maybe the methane from their farts will kill them off. (SARCASM, for those who don't get humor) i know it's a shot in the dark, but a few seasons of dog hunting them would get it under control. Oh wait that's game management. Never mind this is Washington... Ask the snowflakes what to do....
Is it waterfowl season yet..............

Maybe they should revisit hound hunting and the impacts on cougar populations? In BC it is legal to hunt cougars with hounds and they still have a cougar problem. I was invited on a hound hunt up there this year but never could connect on a weekend to make it happen, yet. Then again, you don't go hound hunting in the middle or near cities.... Would be a shame if they banned hunting them. On Vancouver Island you are allowed two cats and three wolves.... so its not like they dont want to knock the population down....
