crazy how many, just in this thread, are hunting Montana for the first time. Once you go, you will want to go every year  :chuckle:

I was just thinking the same thing.  For those going for the first time, make sure to understand the regs.  The antler restrictions vary a bunch and I can often cross a road and shoot or not shoot cows or spikes and many of the units are pretty small where I can hunt 3 in the same day without driving more than a couple miles.  There are also different regulations for whitetail and mulies in the same unit.  Finally, there is a brow tine issue with elk that is different than most states.

The good news is that coming from WA, it will all look much better.

Montana will ruin WA for the first time hunters. I’ve been going to MT for 4yrs now and it is hands down a thousand times better that this horrible state. The auestion is which deer do you want, not will you see a deer.

Hunting Montana for the first time was like going to a game farm. Animals were everywhere.

I took the boys back to Montana for college in 2010 and they were able to get the whole resident package as students for $75.00 (and believe it or not the college had a gun locker in the dorm). Having hunted only Washington and mostly the western part of the state they both promptly shot the first two-point they saw not realizing that they had the real potential for a mature buck. They learned their lesson and after that those deer get a pass. After college they both stayed in Montana and now they take me hunting.

I am another first timer to draw big game combo. Heading over tomorrow for a week or two. Never too early to start trying to find a place to hunt. Going to be a challenge going in blind. I have lots of time to hunt so for you other tag holders, as soon as you fill your tags give me a hint on where to go. ;)

A buddy and I drew deer.  It will be his first hunt in MT.

I would be online ready to go at 5 am MDT.  The only reference I have seen is that the sold out in "under a week" in 2017.  If you want to go, no reason to wait as they will certainly sell out.
