Go to turkey call
« on: April 10, 2019, 02:18:17 PM »
This will be my first year turkey hunting I already got the shotgun, camo, and put in my fair share of scouting and located some turkeys now all I need is a good call and was wondering what is the best type.

Depends, I have a slate Wicked Series Zink that I rarely use. My favorite call type is a diaphragm, currently I really like a Hunter Wallis diaphragm from Zink. My other one I used last year that I really liked was the Zink lucky lady.

I tell everyone to get a diaphragm call and learn how to use it. It ain't easy but it ain't hard either. If you are new buy a box, a pot (aka slate), and a diaphragm call. Play with all of them. There is a time and a place for each. Don't get stuck on an easy call and forget to experience the rest as you become a better hunter. Most calls are fun to use and practice with, so remember to enjoy yourself.

My go to calls are Pot style calls and will use a Box call as well. I suck at Mouth calls so I pretty much avoid them.

If I could only choose one, it would definitely be a slate for me. That being said, I mostly use slate and diaphragm depending on the situation.

For starters I would recommend a cherry pot with green slate surface over glass soundboard. They are cheap and the sound quality is unreal. You can get a lot done with this call, easy to play. I own 25 or so
Sinclair pot calls and they are all good...made in U.S.A by hand. Last year we hit four toms in four days with Sinclair calls on public land and screwed up multiple other opportunities in the process  :chuckle:

My advice to any new turkey hunter would be to invest the most time and effort into mastering a good sounding pot call.

Box call outside of 150 yards.
A slate call inside of 150 yards.
A mouth call to finish them off.
