Is this map any good?
« on: April 14, 2019, 10:40:14 PM »
I found this http://naturemappingfoundation.org/natmap/maps/wa/birds/WA_wild_turkey.html map of turkey habitat throughout the state. Would this be considered pretty accurate or are the a fair amount of areas that the map is missing?

I didn't see any Eastern turkey areas on that map, but only fools like me hunt for them. What were you hoping to do with the map? Turkey are disbursed in all those areas. Without a measure for population density it could easily be misleading. The NE corner will always be the prime spot to hunt wild turkey. If memory serves me correct WDFW has a map that seemed a little more current, though I can't recall where.

That map is no where near accurate.  I have a map that I do my seminars with.  I find it and post it.

It's useful in that there are turkeys pretty much everywhere they mapped.  However, there are a lot of areas with turkeys that aren't shown.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Here you go.  This is still a bit old but a lot better than what you had.

This will be my first year hunting turkeys. On the map I linked they had them around rivers and streams. What type of elevations would you find turkeys, or can you find them at any elevation?

Any elevation but early they tend to follow the snow line.  They may feed down to river bottoms but they mostly roost on hills and ridges. South facing slopes mostly.

I will add that Russ's map shows what units they are in, not necessarily that they are spread throughout those units.
They are few and far between on the Wetside. Never have heard of seen one in Snohomish County in 21 year s.  There is a very limited area in Thurston County were they can be found regularly, and very few and far between on the outskirts of that.  I would say hardly any, if any in Winston or Ryderwood Units as well.
May that for which I prepare never come to pass.

Yes it is.  Yes it does not show population or specific area in locations but I can tell you that birds are coming over Stevens pass which on the west side is Snohomish county.  Not many but a few.
