I picked up a Ruger GP-100 Match Champion in 10mm today after dumping my 327 Federal GP-100 on Jpharcher. I actually saw it at the shop we did the transfer at so it worked out pretty well. I've been trying to find somebody with one in stock so I could get my hands on it before ordering one, but nobody ever has one on the shelf!



As a preemptive response to everyone who's going to say that I should have picked up a Glock (or any of the other semi autos); I've already been there and done that. Here's the running list of 10mm guns I've had so far:

S&W 610
Kimber Eclipse
G29
G20
EAA Whitness
Dan Wesson CCBT
Rock Island 1911
Ruger Blackhawk convertible (10mm/38-40)

Every semi auto suffers from the same issue, mag length. Loading a 10mm in a revolver takes that problem out of the equation and makes everything more fun. Here's a comparison of the 10mm loads I've shot in the revolvers compared to a standard 10mm with an OAL of 1.260" to feed through a magazine.

That's a 200gr XTP on the left and those are 220s on the right. I was getting a touch over 1300 fps with the 220s in the 6.5" barreled S&W 610 and should be around 1200 fps in the 4.2" GP-100.

This time around, I'm going to ream the cylinder out 10mm Mag so I can stretch it out even more. I couldn't bring myself to rechamber the cylinder on the S&W 610 and it just didn't make sense to do it to the Blackhawk convertible because the would mean it could only shoot the 10mm Mag. Since the GP-100 uses moon clips, I can ream the chambers out and still have the ability to shoot 40 S&W and standard 10mm ammo in case I sell the gun.

All of this is just to make up for the fact that nobody makes a medium framed 4" barreled 41 Mag any more. The whole reason I ended up with the last GP-100 in 327 Federal was because I wanted to send it off to have Gary Reeder convert it to 41 Mag, but then Ruger released the 10mm version about the same time. Buying the Ruger 10mm version is a fraction of the cost of having Gary Reeder (or Dave Clement) convert an existing gun to either 10mm or 41 mag, so it was a no brainer. Buying this gun saved me nearly $1800, I had to do it!

My S&W 3 in. 41 mag was the least accurate pistol I have owned. And last revolver.
I could throw it more accurately then shoot it, LOL

I've always thought those were a good looking gun, nice purchase!

Never really cared for Ruger rifles but I've always liked their revolvers.  Can't say I've owned a lot of Ruger revolvers but I can say I've never owned one that didn't shoot well.  Hands down the most accurate handgun I've ever owned was a Ruger Redhawk 44mag w/7.5 inch barrel.

You sir have gone too far! I liked that little 327 more than I wanted to but those little bullets just didn't work very well on porcupines. I'd be all over a good quality 41 mag in a medium frame revolver. I had a Taurus titanium Tracker in 41 mag that would have been the perfect gun if it weren't a Taurus. I put a lot of heavy loads through that gun and I ended up selling it after it started to get a little bit loose. The guy who bought planned to shoot a couple rounds a year and just carry it as a pack gun the rest of the time so it was perfect for him. He's had it 6 years now and only shot 50 rounds through it!

So how does it shoot?

I've only put 72 shots through it so far and it's doing really well. I'm just burning through my left over plinking ammo from the S&W 610 revolver right now which is a 220gr plated bullet over 5.5gr of Trailboss powder which gives me 780 fps from the 4" barrel. Groups are about 2.5" for 6 shots at 20 yards shooting double action. I actually used the same powder charge with a 215gr cast bullet in the 41 Mag with very similar results.

Once I've put about 300 rounds through the gun I'll start working up some other loads to see what it can really do. I'm trying to get a custom 200gr copper HP bullet made specifically for this gun. I hoping to have a bullet with a semi-spitzer profile similar to Hornady's FlexTip bullets that they use in their 44 and 45 loads. It'll never be a 41 mag, but it should be about as close as I can get in a GP-100 without dropping the money on a full custom conversion.

Can't complain with those groups!
My 41 Mag groups was closer to 2.5 FEET at 10 yards

I really like the looks of it, Ruger makes a heck of a revolver.  Are those factory or aftermarket grips?

I have never been the biggest Ruger fan and somehow have ended up with a few, still think the best gun they ever built was a 10/22 but that is a pretty cool pistol. I might have to play with one.

After I get a little more time with this gun I might try taking it up to one of the steel matches at the local clubs to see how it does. The DA trigger is a little heavy but it's really smoothing out after a couple hours worth of dry fire practice.

Yep, those are the factory grips. I love the way they look and feel, but I preferred the Hogue finger grooved grips I had on my last GP-100. The wood grips are a bit bulkier and they're in the way a little bit when wearing the gun in a Simply Rugged holster. It's not a big deal, just something I need to adjust to.

I hate to say it, but ever since Bill Ruger died the company has really stepped up. In the last 10 years or so Ruger has been sending out some great products. The M77 Hawkeye is one of my favorite factory rifles, the Ruger American line has proven to be an affordable gun that shoots well beyond it's price point (even the Creedmoors  ) and they've been knocking it out of the park with their revolvers lately. Quality has gone up, they've offering better options and they've really started to listen to their customers.
