Once all the holes with the jig were drilled in the floor and sides we set the Thwart Bulkheads in place. We drilled the holes and zip tied them in place. We then attached the side of the hull, careful not it tighten them too much sho the couldn't be adjusted wit a tap of the hand. Once this was all stitched together and fitted we used quick 5 min epoxy to glue the joints.

The Whatcom chapter is having Kyle Spragens the waterfowl section mgr at the next meeting Tuesday may 7th 7pm at the Laural Farm and Western Supply store. To explain the season setting process.

He gave a great presentation to our chapter. Encourage him to video it and post it on the WDFW you tube page.

After the 5 min Epoxy hardend we went around and cut all the zip ties and removed them. The epoxy holds the  wood in place while we apply the next step. While the stitches are being removed the 2 part fiberglass epoxy is mixed up taking about 2 min. It is then worked into the strips of 12 ounce reinforcement glass.. The weight of the glass is measured per square yard.  A mix of fiberglass epoxy and wood flower is mixed up. This is done to fill in the seams of the joints and fill holes.  This mixture is placed in a plastic bag. A corner is cut out of the bag and squeezed out just like you would apply frosting on a cake. Trimming a small squeegee  to a smooth radius  speeds the application.

We will be hosting a stitch and glue boat building demonstration/workshop Thursday night May 9th, 2019 from 6-8pm at our shop.  This is a great opportunity to come out and learn how stitch and glue boats are built.

 Stitch and glue boat building is a fun and easy way to build boats from plywood sheets that are cut to shape and then joined using epoxy putty and fiberglass tape to create a structural joint.

All types and sorts of boats have been built using this method.  At the demo we'll stitch a boat together and glue the joints, then we'll cover the other aspects of boat building from sheathing the outside of the boat with fiberglass fabric to installing gunwales and trim.

This is a hands on demonstration so come ready to work (and wear appropriate clothing).

After the corners have been filled and smoothed out the 12oz strips are applied to reinforce the seams. When applying the strips of glass over the uncured filler, care must be taken not to press down too hard. The small rollers help in applying the glass by maximizing contact eliminating creases and air bubbles. Once the glass is applied Peel Ply is added to smooth out the seams. Peel ply isn't very expensive, and be avoided at the cost of more time sanding. The rollers are used over the Peel Ply working out all the bubbles.

I talked to Matt last night while working on the boat with the other chapter  members. There will be BBQ ribs Chicken and fixings at the event!  My first demo the did the same thing and it was some goog eating.  Not only will you get a chance to fill your belly but do a little glassing on the boat we are building. I know at least a couple of chapter members will be there and I may if the schedual allows.

So with the floor and seam glasses we had a little trimming and peel ply to take off. We previously glassed the inside of the the side panels. It made that process easier, but we found that stitching the sides in place as a much harder proposition. We deviated from the plans using thicker higher quality plywood AND glassing the inside making the panels stiffer. The panel attached to front and back bulkheads and it didn't want to bend very easy on that curve. There are 2 ways to not struggle like we did. Use the thinner plywood and add gussets to make up for the thinner material. We had to resort to using bailing wire to stitch the troublesome points instead of the zip ties.

Some final fillet and glass reinforcements on the inside. Fillet was also added  to any other gaps or radius that would get glass over them in the future.
