Moved to Ellensburg from Spokane
« on: April 25, 2019, 04:57:01 PM »
I've posted about my move a couple months ago, but now I need to get more in depth!  So, I recently moved from Spokane to Ellensburg.  All of my elk hunting is archery, and has mostly taken place in the GMUs that make up the north eastern corner of the state.  That's about to all change.  I drew the multi-season elk permit!  Oh boy...I'm lost now.  This opens up a whole new world for me, one which I'm a little intimidated about...haha.

I've never applied for any special hunts, other than Multi Season, Second Deer, Antlerless Moose and the OIL Moose.  Now that I have the multi-season elk permit, I can apply for other special hunts, but is it worth it?

I don't even know where to start my scouting, or research!  I've always hunted areas that I've known my whole life.  Now I'm living in Central Washington, and have the ability to hunt elk throughout the entire state, this year.

I know there's always those that ask questions, without being willing to put in the work. I'm definitely willing to put in the work, scouting, hiking, etc.  However, I don't even know where to begin. I don't even know if I know what questions I should be asking... I'm ready to get out, on my days off, and put some miles on my boots, with a pack on my back.  It'll help me get into shape for elk season too!

I will still hunt the NE corner of the state.  However, it'd also be good to learn more local areas.  I want to have areas where I can head to, on a day off, without having to travel for hours.

Basically there are 2 herds.  The Yakima Herd south of I-90, and the Colockum Herd north of I-90.

South of 90 is spike only and north of 90 is true spike only. Might want to stay with the northeast corner of the state.

I was under the impression that there were a couple units, north of I90, that allowed branched antler or cows?  Near Cle-Elum maybe?

No branched antler opportunity at all. True spike only north of I90 for rifle and muzzleloader. Antlerless and true spike for archery
