The wife and I are on our way to Stevens County to run my turkey circuit. Plan to do some mid day prospecting.

Just got back from Colville near Republic for two days. I heard two gobbles in 48 hours in the woods! Was so surprised to see this post when I got home last night!
I'm headed back within the next few weeks, it's so hard to drive home skunked!

If you are a new turkey hunter or haven't been out yet, now is the PERFECT time.  I'm seeing more and more mature gobblers first thing in the morning ALONE!  They are out looking for ladies and the girls are beginning to set on the nest so you will have less and less competition.  They are still gobbling good right now.  Better hit it hard the next couple of weeks before the gobbling tapers off.  Good luck!!!

agree! going out this weekend!

Went out this morning, had to make it a quick hunt as I had a dental appointment at 1100.  Got to the woods at 0800.  At 0855 got a response downhill.  Set up in a beautiful meadow and started calling.  Nothing for about 10 minutes.  Then 3 or 4 gobblers started gobbling back, probably gobbled 45 to 50 times over the next 20 minutes.  I thought they were getting closer at one point, but nope.  Looked at my watch and saw that it was 0930.  I had to get home nd drive a half an hour to the dentist.  Called one more time and BOOM really loud booming gobble, but from my right.  Turned my head and thought about shifting around as I was all out of position for this bird, but he was too close.  Saw the top of the fan coming in at about 20 yards, then the head.  He walked over a little bank to my right and started down the hill.  Full strut spittin and drumming the whole way down and walked past me at 7 yards.  One of the most beautiful birds I have ever called.  He started to walk past and went into strut again and his fan covered up his head so I tried to get into position to shoot and he busted me.  Started running and zigging and zagging and I fricken missed him clean at 15 yards.  Ugh.  Probably the worst miss in my 42 years of hunting birds.

I sat for four hours in the increasing cold of the evening my last day out. About three hours in a turkey flew over my head and across the field. It was maybe two feet above me at the time and came from behind. I think it busted me but I can't be sure. Heck of an experience. Had a flock of 30 birds walk by me within ten feet back in September. I sure hope everyone is having a great time. I always have a great story after every hunt. Occasionally it includes filling a tag.

Now is definitely the time. Called in a nice bird for my buddy to put his second tag on this morning at 6 am. It’s been a great season I wish I still had a tag.

Going out next weekend, hoping my practicing of calling at least gets them close this time :). I am still learning how to call, watching all the videos I can.

Things were very slow in the part of 121 I hunt. No gobbling at all on Thursday and Friday in an area typically loaded with birds. Finally got a courtesy gobble mid day Saturday. Only answered once. Had several hens with him still mid day. Plenty of ticks.
