Hunting Goldens
« on: May 08, 2019, 10:57:52 AM »
Towards the end of the year I am looking at getting myself a hunting golden. Does anyone have recommendations for a good breeder? I am not necessarily fired up by an AKC dog though am not opposed. Cost is just a factor and I guess I am ruined that my first dog, a barnyard bred golden for a couple hundred bucks, was great.

I know Loki here breeds goldens and might have a litter early this year.

Open to PMs or just comments. Thanks all.

Great choice in dogs.  If I hear of a good litter I will let you know.

Few people at Whistling Wings HRC run goldens. I think they get them from somewhere in B.C?
Colin will know more.

I currently have a 5 month old out of SkyRiver Goldens in Ellensburg.  Not heavy into hunt training yet but this dog has excellent drive and wonderful “off switch” which my current yellow lab, 13 years old Saturday, never had.  Makes for an excellent dog in the field/blind and home.  My lab was great on pheasants but super high energy in the duck blind unless there was constant action.  Goldens can be a shot in the dark as far as hunting genetics, that’s why I spent the money and went with SkyRiver.  Plus all certs on parents and health guarantee on the pups.

Brassfire Retrievers - Chris Braswell.  Outstanding Goldens.  Located in Arlington.  Top notch dogs in every respect.

Chesapeke, I was hoping to follow up with your lead but cannot find contact info for Chris Braswell online. Do you have any information? Thank you!

I would advise being extremely cautious with whom ever you decide to get a golden from. They are prone to many genetic diseases and health problems when not properly bred.

Chris Brasswell would be a great source of information if she doesn't have an upcoming litter. I will see if I can track her number down. Additionally there are a few breeders on one of the islands in BC, Vancouver I think. Cathy minor, Good N Guns Kennel and Zanari Kennels to name a few.

There are several good Golden's in the Whistling Wings Club. Well bred Golden's can be hard to come by and cost a lot more than labs. Take your time and do your research. As was recommended to me stack the deck in your favor in every aspect you can control.

Call Chris. She will give good advice on a direction to go
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."
Theodore Roosevelt 1899
