Ticks on a bear.

Shot a small bear in MT on Tuesday and that guy had lots of ticks on him, is there a trick to kill them? before they spread out around my house. I did filled my cooler with dishsoap and water, and just left it there till tommorow.Thanks guys

If the hide is already soaking you could dump in some permethrin into the water, stir it up good. 
Or dump the water and start over, but you might loose some floater not yet dead ticks


Not a bad idea to have some on hand, you can treat your clothing with it when hunting in tick country, lot's of tutorials on youtube for treating your clothing for ticks.

I get it at North 40 outfitters in Colville, it's common in any tractor supply type place that sells livestock equipment.

most people use a garbage sack and raid, to keep the hide dry.   but if it's already wet a permethrin dip would be the ticket.


I wouldn't suggest wetting a dry hide just for a tick dip, use the raid and garbage sack method.


let your taxi know that you did a permethrin dip (or raid in a garbage bag), so he/she can glove up and rinse it out good.

My taxi used hartz flea and tic spray on my hide. But I'm pretty sure ticks die within 24 hours without a host so I've heard anyways.

I think they bail but I don’t think they die. You and that bear pick them up off brush most of the time right? They lived there, sure they can live once they let go of a host. That’s my elementary assumption anyway.

We just took a bear loaded with ticks to the taxidermist, they put the hide in a plastic bag and sprayed some bug killer in there and closed it to let it sit overnight. They said that does the trick.

We sprayed our clothes with permethin, but you do not want to get that on your skin.  We were told in the Military that it is very cancerous if exposed to the skin when wet.  We sprayed our uniforms and let dry.  Not sure I would want to work a hide that had been in that stuff.

If they had some lunch they can leave up to 30 days, atleast thats what i found online.

On ice is fine as long as you keep it dry.  Cool and dry is the best.  Wet is a bad.....or so my taxidermist says!!  I tell him every year I hosed it off and I think he dang near has a heart attack.       If you can't keep it cold then salt it or freeze it.
