Berries are so plentiful this year, i hope it doesnt make the bears disinterested in distress calls.  Youd think even with unlimited berries they should still want some easy meat.

USFS was on the local radio this morning reminding people that you can only pick up to 3 gallons on national forest lands unless you get a commercial permit to pick more.

Is that per day?  Picking more than 3 gallons in a day sounds pretty ambitious.

I didn't catch id=f that was per day or total off USFS, also there are plenty of places to pick that aren't USFS.

could be interesting. we had a bait full of good stuff like hostess fruit pies and meat in an area loaded with huckleberries and the bears could hardly care less about the bait. We decided we should take the easy route and just to shoot one out of the huckleberry brush  :chuckle: It was a unit open till end of july and the huckleberries were crazy that year. I think they will come to calls though if for nothing but curiosity.

I rarely pick more than a gallon a day maybe gallon and a half if count what I eat.  Some times it takes a few hours some time most the day but once I got a gallon I’m ready to go.  Huckleberry rakes suck!!!!!! Sure it’s faster but then you gotta clean all the stinking leaves out of them.   Least hand picked I only take the ripe ones.  Never used a rake my self but went picking with a friend that used one. His bag was twice mine but by the time he cleaned it up I had more.  With the good technique a person could pick 3 gallons a day if they could keep from filling their gut.  We often call it quits with 3-5 gallons in the freezer.  That lasts us the year even with jam gifts.  We never sell
