What Permits Do I Need?
« on: May 20, 2019, 06:34:37 PM »
This weekend I'm planning to enter an Olympic Wilderness area by way of Olympic National Park, and I cannot figure out what set of passes I need to pick up to be legal.  I've currently got a discover pass and an olympic park pass.  Will I need a pass for the wilderness area as well?

You guys know this sort of thing, I'm sure.

Park pass is all, assuming you are parking in the park.  Discover pass is for DNR/state parks.  If you go in from a USFS improved site you need the NW Forest pass.

Most wilderness areas have permit boxes at trailheads that you can fill out. They are free permits for day use. If you are camping in wilderness area you might need to pay a small fee. I would talk to US forest service, they manage the wilderness areas.

Thanks for the reply, all I can find online agrees with you that if I don't enter the wilderness area through one of their trails then I'm good to go.

This is a good idea, I'll call around tomorrow morning to be sure.  Thanks man.

You called it Jimmy, talked to two Park employees today (first one wasn't sure), and so long as I'm camping in the wilderness area, and entering that without using a fs fee trail, all I need is the park pass for my vehicle.
