What is this guy?
« on: May 21, 2019, 07:46:29 AM »
Took the father in law out fishing this weekend while he’s up from Comifornia. He caught a huge fish and before we could get a picture he wiggles out of his hands. Probably why he was so big. Anyway I ended up catching this guy and couldn’t find anything that resembles him in the WDWF book picture wise.

Old Dog, I agree.  Back in the day in NW MT, we called em "Dollies" but over the years, they started classifying them as two different fish (Dolly Varden and Bull Trout).  And yes, you can keep them in some areas in WA as part of your daily fish catch limit IAW the WDFW Fish Regs.  Been years since I ate them but remember they weren't that good  ;)

Probably a lake trout, you could be sure if the tail was shown.  Lakers have a deep fork and bulls don't.  Otherwise, I think they look very similar.

To add some info to this great thread:

"Bull trout (scientific name: Salvelinus confluentus), like their cousins, the lake trout and brook trout, are not considered trout at all. Along with the Dolly Varden (and of course Arctic char), they are members of the char family. For years people believed that the bull trout was just a localized version of Dolly Varden, but it is now accepted that they are two different species."

Bull trout is likely.
As Stein mentioned, need to see the top fin or tail for a definitive i.d.  Looks like it was caught off the shore.  Lakers are a deep water fish except when spawning.

Not always true. Its actually very common to target lake trout in 20 ft of water when the water is cold.

As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Looks like a Lake Trout/Mackinaw to me too.  At Lake Pend Oreille they get pretty big, I think the record is something around 40+lbs.  Not sure if Idaho Fish and Game still have a bounty on them or not, but they used to pay you $15 for every Mackinaw fish head you turned in.
