.41 MAG Bear bullet ?
« on: May 23, 2019, 10:31:21 AM »
Headed to Montana this fall for deer and elk - just wondering what would be a good bullet choice for the .41 Mag sidearm in case a Grizz should get stupid - i do reload my own ammo but need to buy bullets-hollow point ?

No hollow points, you need solid lead.  Here you go..... I use their 305 GN for my .44 MAG while in griz country.

Buffalo Bore Heavy .41 mag loads.

Be sure to do a little accuracy testing with the heavy bullets in a 41 mag. A lot of guns can’t stabilize the 265gr and heavier LFN style cast bullets. Better stability gives better penetration/performance.

Yeah i will for sure be doing some testing once new bullets are bought and loaded. Thats good to know about the heavier bullets, ive never shot anything over 240grains out of that pistol- its a Smith and Wesson Model 657 Stainless with 6” barrel.

Buy a few hard cast loads and test them for penetration on some thick wood blocks. I found some surprises in performance for 10 mm. Buffalo bore 220 hard cast was by far the winner for me, and they cycled well. If you need them you will have only a few seconds to draw and fire, so lots of practice is worth it, regardless of the price of ammo.
There is not enough wilderness left in the world, or in the hearts of men.

Carried an old well worn 3 screw 41 mag back when I guided for bear. Always loaded with hard cast, wide meplat loads. Only used it on bears a couple times with good, bone breaking results. Now it's one of either 44mag, 454 Casull, or the big 50 cal S&W that go with me now.

Nice bear, but that looks like a Super Redhawk, not a 3 screw Blackhawk.
