My 6 point blacktail!
« on: October 26, 2007, 10:54:07 AM »
Pysche! Made ya look...so its only a spike.

Here's the story:

After an unsuccesful muley hunt over by twisp (other than my brother and one other guy in our camp taggin out) I was desperate to fill my tag. I had been stating all morning the first legal buck I see I'm shootin it.

So, Jimmy (my bro) and I head to Mt Baker to a honey hole. In the early morning we hike all over getting soaked clean through from the nasty winds, rain, sleet and snow. We saw no deer hiking, although Jimmy heard a bear ripping a stump apart, but couldnt get a shot cause of the fog.

Freezing, we call it quits and head to the truck where coffee awaits, we decided to heat up and road hunt (which is rare for us). As we drive down the road a bear crosses infront of us, but no way to get a shot off...but it was cool. A good sized bear for sure with a big Ole butt.

We continue down the main road and off spurs, we end up seeing (while road hunting) 10 deer, 1 bear and 2 grouse...not all that bad. On the way out, I spot a deer about 90 yards up the road standing in a ditch to the side (turns out, there were 4 does with him off in the woods too). We stop, I spot the horns, double check, take the shot. The deer piles up, didnt move at all. We drive up and drag it about 5 whole feet, throw it in the truck and off we go.

It was an interesting morning for sure with the shortest drag out in the history of drag outs. It has been a good year for me and my bro(s). This year my new 300 WSM has taken out a bear and filled my deer tag, so I am happy. Plenty of meat in the freezer.

Hope you enjoyed the read!
And ya, I know the deer is pathetic looking, but it's legal. I think that is why I have such a big grin in the pic, I was more laughing at myself then anything.
Saylean  ;)

Nice, ive killed a few of spikes, better than tag soup and they eat good.  Cant beat the drag.  that beats my 40 drag to the road.  :chuckle:

Good meat!!!   I too have shot my share of deer just like that.  I have passed on at least 6 of them out in vail already this year and the way this weather is going I may just be kicking myself for it.

Vail has so many spikes and deer in general that the gene pool is getting clogged.  Some of the weirdest ugliest spike and two point antlers come out of there every year and when aged a lot of the spikes are in the 2-3 year old range.  I have gotten some nice deer out of there the last few years and since it is only 15 minutes from home I have a hard time getting my ass out to any other spots for deer.  Elk is a different story.

I drove my truck to my deer.
through the wheat stubble, dropped the tailgate and threw him in!!
the same for the whitetail doe one of the old guys killed.
this year we had ropes and packboards and 4 wheelers with winches, and the 2 deer we killed we drove to. don't it figure.

A tag punched can be better than tag soup, the short drag out was an added bonus, had you knocked down that bad boy a few miles in, I don't think you would have been the only one laughing though.

Jackelope where is a picture of your buck?  Come on, it can't be that small.

"maintained portion of any public highway.." etc...it was a dirt road, private, not maintained, and completely legal. It crossed my mind before I shot and I was well aware of the background (where the bullet would head once it left the deer).

Billy, we saw a 8x7 monster blacktail this summer. Had bases like beer cans, he was still in velvet. I was in a state of shock.....while my sons were feeding him bread, LOL. This was up at the huricane ridge lodge parking lot.

You have to be careful about that, you'll end up on the same list I am.  These blacktails carry alot of clout around here.

WOW what a pig, Some of us that have never seen a real pig in the "wild" are easy to mislead, LOL. I use to put any blacktail bigger then a 4x4 into the same category as the Lochness Monster and maybe even BigFoot. But according to the Paraphycologist  I have a better chance of actually seeing a Bigfoot, LMAO.

Saylean, that's not a spike, that's just a buck with a set of eye guards. Looks like you are sporting a Tikka there. I shoot a Tikka .300wsm myself. Definitely a good shooting rifle.

I got to hold on to the antlers off that double drop forked thingy of a blacktail lockness monster deal at the sportsman show in puyalup last year. Very heavy. I believe they made reproductions of the antlers.
