Bank fishing Columbia for sturgeon
« on: May 24, 2019, 01:47:44 PM »
Anyone do it near the Astoria/Megler bridge?  Now that they've closed the Chehalis, I need a sturgeon fix and the Columbia is the closest option.  Also, anyone use the ramp at Knappton?  I've got a 12' aluminum boat I haul in the back of the truck but don't have any info on this ramp.  Don't know if it is doable at low and/or high tide.

Any info or advice is appreciated

Happy Memorial Day everyone!  God Bless Our Troops!  :salute:

I use to bank fish down there all the time with good success. There are quite a few spots above and below the bridge. Some spots are at turnouts. Others you will have to park along the guard rail or across the road. The fishing has gone way down hill but you never know. The Knappton launch is really rough and narrow. You will have to maneuver through some pilings. With your boat shouldn't be  problem except you may have to drag it a fair ways on a low tide. Only room for a rig or 2 to park there and the rest park alongside the hiway. Usually not many people there though. Might not be any with fishing the way it is.

Not questioning your boating skills, so no disrespect.  A 12 ft boat has very little business down around Astoria.  Ive been out many times when a 12 ft boat would be fine, but it can and WILL change in a very quick moment.  To much water and wind for a vessel of that size.  (my not always so humble opinion)

I think its doable if your extremely careful and wise. I wouldn't get too far from the ramp in case the wind picks up.

Thanks for the replies guys.  As far as the little boat on the big river, I was only planning on going straight out from the ramp to deeper water.  Wouldn't be very far from the ramp in case the wind and waves picked up.  Rough water in a little boat sucks.  Been there done that. Don't care to repeat it. :o
