Huckleberry success!
« on: May 27, 2019, 12:51:58 AM »
My buddy Frank Hasiak and I left Snohomish county Friday after work around 5 and headed to Huckleberry Unit for the Spring Bear tag I drew. We arrived about midnight and set up camp. We woke up around 4:30am and started our hike to a vantage point only to see no more than 100 yard due to fog. We piddled around under a tarp for a short time and decided to hit a lower elevation in hopes of better visibility and wound up on a 40 min drive North of where we started. With no signs of the fog letting up, Frank and I took a short nap in the truck while parked at a State property gate at 3,600 feet and woke up at 1:00pm. We through on our packs and slow walked about 40 minutes only to find fresh bear scat on the edge of a clear cut, so we found the nearest vantage and sat. After patiently waiting until 7:00 pm, Frank wide eyed with enthusiasm says "Bear, Bear". Of course I say "where, where". From my spotters angle, he could see a Bear traveling up the drainage from the road we were sitting above. I immediately turned my camera and hit record. Then realized I needed to lay prone exactly where the tripod and camera were setting. I basically threw the camera out of the way and lined up a shot. Frank whispered 235, I was zeroed for 200 with my 30-06. The boar was slightly quartering away with his front right shoulder forward uphill. It was perfect. Needless to say I pulled a good shot off and killed this Bruin.

Congrats on the bear and that’s a dandy!
May my presence go unnoticed, may my shot be true, may the blood trail be short.
