Last minute Idaho spring bear hunt
« on: May 30, 2019, 10:25:26 AM »
I'm heading to the Salmon area for 4 days, leaving June 13, to do some scouting for this upcoming deer/elk season. I already have a wolf tag in my pocket, but I noticed that bear is open until June 30 where we'll be so I'm considering adding a bear tag to the arsenal. I have never hunted spring bear before. Anyone have any input for a complete newbie? I've read that it can get pretty good in June as the boars go into super cruise mode looking for sows.

I won't be putting a ton of effort into it, most likely be a passive deal, but I'd be pretty frustrated if I was presented with an opportunity and couldn't seize it.

Man that sounds like a blast! Follow the new green grass,  snow line if its still there, avalanche chutes with thick green grass growing below snow line. Glassing the evenings in these areas has always brought me the most sightings!

Good luck! I'm jealous!
Just tend your own and live.

Thanks for that. I expected that we would run into snow issues in quite a few spots. Theres plenty enough ground to look at regardless, may just need to walk a little further.

If the unit is a two bear area you can buy a reduced bear tag for $41.75 instead of the more expensive regular tag.

Just making sure, you are looking at the previous regulations to see that your unit is open until June 30 correct? Only reason I ask is they changed a bunch of the units to end June 30 spring of 2020 but not near as many were open that late in the 2017/18 regulation cycle that is still in effect for this years spring bear seasons. I’d hate to see a guy get into trouble because that is definitely a confusing piece to Idaho’s regs

I will double check. I was looking specifically at the units that I was interested in, in their hunt planner tool. I'll go back and look though to confirm. Thanks for the heads up.
